WINTER CONVENTION FRIDAY NIGHT SERVICE

A Traditional Friday Evening Service by Sari Waldman

Kabbalat Shabbat

Mizmor L'David Psalm 29 מזמור לדוד

Ascribe unto God, O you sons of might, ascribe unto God glory and strength. Ascribe unto God the glory due unto God’s Name; worship God in the beauty of holiness. The voice of God is upon the waters: the God of glory thunders, even God upon the many waters. The voice of God is powerful; the voice of God is full of majesty. The voice of God breaks the cedars; yea, God breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. God makes them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild-ox. The voice of God hews out flames of fire; the voice of God shakes the wilderness; God shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of God makes the hinds to calve, and strips the forests bare: and in God’s temple everything says, Glory.(Reader) God sat enthroned at the Flood; yea, God sits as King forever. God will give strength unto God’s people; God will bless God’s people with peace.

[We beseech you, release your captive nation by the mighty strength of your right hand. Accept the joyful chant of your people, lift and purify us, O revered God. O you mighty One, guard as the apple of the eye those that meditate upon your Unity. Bless them, purify them, have mercy upon them, ever bestow your charity unto them. O powerful and holy Being, in your abounding goodness lead your congregation. Turn, you who are the only and exalted God, unto your people, who are mindful of your holiness. Accept our prayer and hearken unto our cry, you that knows all secrets. Blessed be God’s Name, whose glorious kingdom is forever and ever.]

Lecha Dodi לכה דודי

The community sings Lecha Dodi along with the leader.

Rise and face the rear of the room when saying "bo'i v'shalom" through the end of the paragraph.

Come, my beloved, with chorus of praise,
Welcome Bride Sabbath, the Queen of the days.

"Keep and Remember"!—in One divine Word
God that is One, made God's will heard:
One is the name of God, One is God!
God's are the fame and the glory and praise!

Sabbath, to welcome you, joyous we haste;
Fountain of blessing from ever you were—
First in God’s planning, you fashioned the last,
Crown of God's handiwork, chiefest of days.

City of holiness, filled are the years;
Up from your overthrow! Forth from thy fears!
Long have you dwelt in the valley of tears,
Now shall God’s tenderness shepherd your ways.

Rise, O my folk, from the dust of the earth,
Garb you in raiment beseeming your worth;
Nigh draws the hour of the Bethlehemite’s birth,
Freedom who brings, and glorious days.

Wake and bestir you, for come is your light!
Up! With your shining, the world shall be bright;
Sing! For your God is revealed in God's might—
Yours is the splendor God's glory displays!

"Be not ashamed", says God, "nor distressed;
Fear not and doubt not. The people oppressed, Zion, My city, in you shall find rest—
You, that anew on your ruins I raise".

"Those that despoiled you shall plundered be,
Routed all those who showed no ruth;
God shall exult and rejoice in you,
Joyful as bridegroom with bride of youth".

Stretch out your borders to left and to right;
Fear but God, Whom to fear is delight—
The man, son of Perez, shall gladden our sight,
And we shall rejoice to the fullness of days.

Come in your joyousness, Crown of your God;
Come, bring peace to the folk of the Word;
Come where the faithful in gladsome accord,
Hail you as Sabbath-Bride, Queen of the days.

Come where the faithful are hymning your praise;
Come as a bride comes, Queen of the days!

Sh'ma and Its Blessings

Sh'ma שמע

The first line of the Sh'ma is recited out loud and in unison, with the right hand covering the eyes. "Baruch Shem K'vod" is recited in an undertone.

HEAR, O ISRAEL: GOD IS OUR GOD, GOD IS ONE.

Blessed be God's name, whose glorious kingdom is forever and ever.

Sh'ma Yisra-eil, Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad.
Baruch sheim k'vod malchuto l'olam va-ed.

The Amidah

Amidah עמידה

Take three steps back and then three steps forward. Bow as you say "Baruch Atah" and then straighten up.

Bow again while saying the blessing "Magen Avraham."

Blessed are you, O Adonai our God and God of our fathers, God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob, the great, mighty and revered God, the most high God, who bestows lovingkindnesses, and is Master of all things; who remembers the pious deeds of the patriarchs, and in love will bring a redeemer to their children’s children for your Name’s sake.

[On the Sabbath of Repentance say:—
Remember us unto life, O Sovereign, who delights in life, and inscribe us in the book of life, for your own sake, O living God.]

O Sovereign, Helper, Savior and Shield. Blessed are you, O God, the Shield of Abraham.

Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu veilohei avoteinu, elohei avraham, elohei yitzchak, veilohei ya-akov, ha-eil hagadol hagibor v'hanora, eil elyon, gomeil chasadim tovim, v'koneih hakol, v'zocheir chasdei avot, umeivi goeil livnei v'neihem, l'ma-an sh'mo b'ahavah.

The following is said during during the Ten days of Penitence:
Zoch'reinu l'chayim, melech chafeitz bachayim, v'chot'veinu b'seifer hachayim, l'ma-ancha elohim chayim.

You, O God, are mighty for ever, you revive the dead, you are might to save.

[From the Sabbath after Simchat Torah until the First Day of Passover, say:
You cause the wind to blow and the rain to fall.]

You sustain the living with lovingkindness, revive the dead with great mercy, support the falling, heal the sick, free the bound, and keep your faith to them that sleep in the dust. Who is like you, God of mighty acts, and who resembles thee, O Adonai, who orders death and restores life, and causes salvation to spring forth?

[On the Sabbath of Repentance say:—
Who is like your, God of mercy, who in mercy remembers your creatures for life?]

Yea, faithful are you to revive the dead. Blessed are you, O God, who revives the dead.

(On the Sabbath of Repentance conclude the Blessing thus):
הַמֶּלֶךְ הַקָּדוֹשׁ.

You hallowed the seventh day unto your Name, as the end of the creation of heaven and earth; you blessed it above all days, and hallowed it above all seasons; and thus it is written in your Torah:

And the heaven and the earth were finished and all their host. And on the seventh day God had finished the work which God had made; and God rested on the seventh day from all the work which God had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it, because God rested thereon from all the work which God had created and made.

Our God and God of our ancestors, accept our rest; hallow us by your commandments, and grant our portion in your Torah; satisfy us with your goodness, and gladden us with your salvation; purify our hearts to serve you in truth; and in your love and favor, Adonai our God, let us inherit your holy Sabbath; and may Israel, who sanctify your Name, rest thereon. Blessed are you, O God, who hallows the Sabbath.

Bow as you recite "Modim Anachnu Lach"

May our eyes behold your return to Zion in compassion. Blessed are you, God, who restores God's presence to Zion.

We give thanks to you, for you are Adonai our God and the God of our ancestors for ever and ever; you are the Rock of our lives, the Shield of our salvation through every generation. We will give thanks to you and declare your praise for our lives which are committed to your hand, and for our souls which are in your charge, and for your miracles, which are daily with us, and for your wonders and your benefits, which are wrought at all times, evening, morning and noon. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before you, O God, my Rock and my Redeemer.

O my God! guard my tongue from evil and my lips from speaking guile; and to such as curse me let my soul be dumb, yea, let my soul be unto all as the dust. Open my heart to your Torah, and let my soul pursue thy commandments. If any design evil against me, speedily make their counsel of no effect, and frustrate their designs. Do it for the sake of your Name, do it for the sake of your power, do it for the sake of your holiness, do it for the sake of your Torah. In order that your beloved ones may be delivered, O save by your power, and answer me. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before your, O God, my Rock and my Redeemer. God who makes peace in high places, may Gpd make peace for us and for all Israel, and say ye, Amen.

May it be your will, Adonai our God and God of our ancestors , that the temple be speedily rebuilt in our days, and grant our portion in your Torah. And there we will serve your with awe, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto God, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years.

Concluding Prayers

Aleinu עלינו

It is our duty to praise the God of all things, to ascribe greatness to God who formed the world in the beginning; since God has not made us like the nations of other lands, and has not placed us like other families of the earth; since God has not assigned unto us a portion as unto them, nor a lot as unto all their multitude. For we bend the knee and offer worship and thanks before the supreme Sovereign of rulers, the Holy One, blessed be God, who stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth, the seat of whose glory is in the heavens above, and the abode of whose might is in the loftiest heights. God is our God; there is none else: in truth God is our Sovereign; there is none besides God; as it is written in the Torah, And you shall know this day, and lay it to your heart, that Adonai is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.

We therefore hope in you, Adonai our God, that we may speedily behold the glory of your might; when you will remove the abominations from the earth, and heathendom will be utterly destroyed; when the world will be perfected under the kingdom of the Almighty, and all the children of flesh will call upon your Name; when you will turn unto yourself all the evil-doers upon earth. Let all the inhabitants of the world perceive and know that unto you every knee must bow, every tongue must swear allegiance. Before you, Adonai our God, let them bow and worship; and unto your glorious Name let them give honor; let them all accept the yoke of your kingdom, and do you reign over them speedily, and for ever and ever. For the kingdom is yours, and to all eternity you will reign in glory; as it is written in your Torah, "God shall reign for ever and ever." And it is said, "And God shall be Sovereign over all the earth; in that day shall God be One and God's Name One."
