WINTER CONVENTION SATURDAY MORNING SERVICE

A Traditional Saturday Morning Service by Sari Waldman

Preparing for the Service

Prayer When Putting on a Tallit

Wearing a Tallit is a personal choice for both men and women over the age of 13. For those who choose to wear a tallit, first inspect the tzitzis on the corners to make sure no harm has been done to them since their last usage, then fold the tallit. While holding it in position to wrap around yourself, recite the following blessing.

Blessed are You, Adonai, our God, Sovereign of the universe who hallows us with Your mitzvot, and teaches us to wrap ourselves in the fringed tallit.

Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav, v'tzivanu l'hitateif batzitzit.

Wrap yourself in the tallit.

Shacharit Morning Prayers

Mah Tovu

“Mah Tovu” is a song meant to express your gratitude for being able to join in prayer. It is a sign of reverence and appreciation for the house of prayer.

How good are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel! As for me, in the abundance of Your love, I will enter Your house: I will worship toward Your holy temple out of reverence for You. Adonai, I love residing in Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells. I will worship and bow down: I will bend my knee before Adonai, my Maker. May my prayer to You, Adonai, be acceptable: God, in the abundance of Your lovingkindness, answer me with the truth of Your salvation.

Mah tovu ohalecha ya-akov, mishk'notecha yisra-eil. Va-ani b'rov chasd'cha avo veitecha, eshtachaveh el heichol kodsh'cha b'yiratecha. Adonai ahavti m'on beitecha, um'kom mishkan k'vodecha. Adon Olam אדון עולם

You are the Eternal God who ruled before the creation. At the time Your will directly determined what occurred, You were already ruling.

I place my soul in Your hands and trust You with it night and day. I also entrust You with my body. When I have Adonai, I shall never fear.

B'yado afkid ruchi, b'eit ishan v'airah. V'im ruchi g'viyati, Adonai li v'lo ira.

Sh'ma and Its Blessings

Sh'ma שמע

The first line of the Sh'ma is recited out loud and in unison, with the right hand covering the eyes.

Hear, O Israel: Adonai is our God, Adonai is one.

Sh'ma Yisra-eil, Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad.

In an undertone:

Blessed is God’s glory forever and ever.

Baruch sheim k'vod malchuto l'olam va-ed.

And you shall love Adonai your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words, which I command you this day, shall be upon your heart: and you shall teach them diligently unto your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the door-posts of your house, and upon your gates.

And it shall come to pass, if you shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love Adonai your God, and to serve God with all your heart and with all your soul, that I will give the rain of your land in its season, the former rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your corn, and your wine, and your oil. And I will give grass in thy field for your cattle, and you shall eat and be satisfied. Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; and the anger of Adonai be kindled against you, and God shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and you perish quickly from off the good land which Adonai gave you. Therefore shall you lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul; and you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall teach them your children, talking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house, and upon your gates: that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, upon the land which Adonai swore unto your ancestors to give them, as the days of the heavens above the earth.

And Adonai spoke to Moses, saying. Speak to the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them a fringe upon the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of each corner a cord of blue: and it shall be for you for a fringe, that you may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of Adonai, and do them: and that you go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you go astray: that you may remember and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God. I am Adonai your God, who brought you out of the Land of Egypt, to be your God: I am Adonai your God.

The Amidah

V'shamru

And the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel forever, that in six days Adonai made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day rested, and ceased from all work.

The Chatzi Kaddish is recited by the Chazzan, with the community responding amen throughout.

Magnified and sanctified be God's great Name in the world which God hath created according to God's will. May God establish God's kingdom during your life and during your days, and during the life of all the house of Israel, even speedily and at a near time, and say you, Amen.

Comm. and Reader.—Let God's great Name be blessed for ever and to all eternity.

Reader.—Blessed, praised and glorified, exalted, extolled and honored, magnified and lauded be the Name of the Holy One, who should be blessed; though God be high above all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations, which are uttered in the world; and say you, Amen.

Ain K'Eloheinu

There is none like our God, none like Adonai, none like our Sovereign, none like our Redeemer.

Who is like our God, who like Adonai, who like our Sovereign, who like our Saviour?

We will give thanks to our God, we will give thanks to Adonai, we will give thanks to our Sovereign, we will give thanks to our Redeemer.

Blessed be our God, blessed be Adonai, blessed be our Sovereign, blessed be our Redeemer.

You are our God, You are Adonai, You are our Sovereign, You are our Redeemer.

You are the One to whom our ancestors offered spices.

Aleinu

Rise for Aleinu.

It is customary to bow at “va-anachnu korim” and stand up at “modim.”

It is our duty to praise the Ruler of all things, to ascribe greatness to the One who formed the world in the beginning. So we bend the knee and offer worship and thanks before the supreme Sovereign of sovereigns, the Holy One, who stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth, the seat of whose glory is in the heavens above, and the residence of whose might is in the loftiest heights. Adonai is our God; there is none else: in truth Adonai is our Ruler; there is none else; as it is written in the Torah: “And you shall know this day, and lay it to your heart, that Adonai is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath: there is none else."

We therefore place our hope in You, Adonai our God, that we may speedily behold the glory of Your might, when You will purify the earth, and righteousness will dominate. When the world will be perfected under the rule of the Almighty, and all the world’s children will call Your Name. When You will turn to Yourself all the evil-doers upon earth. Let all the inhabitants of the world perceive and know that to You every knee must bow, every tongue must swear allegiance. Before You, Adonai our God, let them bow and worship, and to Your glorious Name let them give honor. Let them all accept You and have You reign over them speedily, and forever and ever. The dominion is Yours, and for all eternity You will reign in glory. As it is written in Your Torah, “Adonai shall reign forever and ever.” And it is said, “Adonai shall be ruler over all the Earth: in that day, Adonai shall be One and God’s name shall be One.”

Mourner's Kaddish

In some communities, only those in mourning or observing a yartzheit stand and recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. However, particularly since the Holocaust, some communities have developed the practice of everyone present reciting the Kaddish on behalf of those who have no one left to say Kaddish for them.

Therefore, each individual should stand or sit as is their personal custom.

The community responds amen throughout.

Mourner.—Magnified and sanctified be God's great Name in the world which God created according to God's will. May God establish God's kingdom during your life and during your days, and during the life of all the house of Israel, even speedily and at a near time and say you, Amen.
Cong. and Mourner.—Let God's great Name be blessed forever and to all eternity.
Mourner.—Blessed, praised and glorified, exalted, extolled and honored, magnified and lauded be the Name of the Holy One, may God be blessed: though God be high above all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations, which are uttered in the world; and say you, Amen.
Congregation.—Amen.
Mourner.—May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life for us and for all Israel; and say you, Amen.
Congregation.—Amen.
Mourner.—God who makes peace in high places, may God make peace for us and for all Israel; and say you, Amen.

Closing Songs

Adon Olam

You are the Eternal God who ruled before the creation. At the time Your will directly determined what occurred, You were already ruling.

Adon olam asher malach, b'terem kol y'tzir nivra. L'eit na-asah v'cheftzo kol, azai melech sh'mo nikra.

And when all else has failed, You will still reign majestically. You were, You are, You will be in glory.

V'acharei kichlot hakol, l'vado yimloch nora. V'hu hayah, v'hu hoveh, v'hu yihyeh, b'tifarah.

You are only One. You do not rely upon or compare with any other. You exist without beginning or end. You know power that cannot be seen or experienced elsewhere.

V'hu echad v'ein sheini, l'hamshil lo l'hachbirah. B'li reishit b'li tachlit, v'lo ha-oz v'hamisrah.

You are my God. You are my Redeemer; my Rock when I am distressed; my confidence; my protection; my aide when I call on You.

V'hu eili v'chai goali, v'tzur chevli b'eit tzarah. V'hu nisi umanos li, m'nat kosi b'yom ekra.

I place my soul in Your hands and trust You with it night and day. I also entrust You with my body. When I have Adonai, I shall never fear.

B'yado afkid ruchi, b'eit ishan v'airah. V'im ruchi g'viyati, Adonai li v'lo ira.
