Preparing for the Service

Star of David

Contains personal content

Welcome to R.C. Camp Style Shabbat Services! We want this to be a fun and relaxing service yet still very meaningful. Please respect each other's practices, and feel free to sing loudly!

Arise my love, my fair one,
and come away.
for though the winter has past
and the rain is gone
the flowers appear on Earth
the time of singing has come
and the voice of the turtle is heard.

Mah Tovu

Contains personal content

“Mah Tovu” is a song meant to express your gratitude for being able to join in prayer. It is a sign of reverence and appreciation for the house of prayer.

Mah tovu ohalecha ya-akov, mishk'notecha yisra-eil. Va-ani b'rov chasd'cha avo veitecha, eshtachaveh el heichol kodsh'cha b'yiratecha. Adonai ahavti m'on beitecha, um'kom mishkan k'vodecha. Va-ani eshtachaveh v'echra-ah, evr'chah lifnei Adonai osi. Va-ani t'filati l'cha Adonai, eit ratzon, elohim b'rav chasdecha, aneini be-emet yishecha.

How good are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel! As for me, in the abundance of Your love, I will enter Your house: I will worship toward Your holy temple out of reverence for You. Adonai, I love residing in Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells. I will worship and bow down: I will bend my knee before Adonai, my Maker. May my prayer to You, Adonai, be acceptable: God, in the abundance of Your lovingkindness, answer me with the truth of Your salvation.

O Merciful One, ever compassionate, have mercy on us. Put it into our hearts to understand and to discern, to mark, learn and teach, to heed, to do and to fulfil in love all the words of instruction in Your Torah. Enlighten our eyes in Your Torah, and let our hearts cling to Your commandments, and unify our hearts. Let us love and revere Your Name, so that we will never be put to shame. Because we have trusted in Your holy, great and revered Name, we shall rejoice and be glad in Your saving power. Bring us in peace from the four corners of the earth, and make us go upright to our land, for You are a God who works salvation. You have chosen us from all peoples and tongues, (Reader) and have brought us near to Your great Name forever in faithfulness, that we might in love give thanks to You and proclaim Your unity. Blessed are You, Adonai, who has chosen Your people Israel in love.

Sh'ma שמע

The first line of the Sh'ma is recited out loud and in unison, with the right hand covering the eyes.

Sh'ma Yisra-eil, Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad.

Hear, O Israel: Adonai is our God, Adonai is one.

In an undertone:

Baruch sheim k'vod malchuto l'olam va-ed.

Blessed is God’s glory forever and ever.

And you shall love Adonai your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words, which I command you this day, shall be upon your heart: and you shall teach them diligently unto your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the door-posts of your house, and upon your gates.

Who is like you among the mighty? Who is like you glorious and holy? Who is like you revered in praise and performing wondrous miracles? With a new song the redeemed people praised Your Name at the seashore. They all gave thanks in unison, and proclaimed Your sovereignty, and said: Adonai shall reign forever and ever!

Take three steps back while saying "tzur yisrael" in preparation for the Amidah.

Rock of Israel, arise to the help of Israel, and deliver according to your promise, Judah and Israel. Our Redeemer, the Master of hosts is God's Name, the Holy One of Israel. Blessed are you, Adonai, who has redeemed Israel.

We will sanctify Your Name in the world, even as they sanctify It in the highest heavens, as it is written by the hand of Your prophet: And they called to each other and said: holy, holy, holy is Adonai above all. The whole earth radiates God’s glory. Then with a noise of great rushing, mighty and strong, they make their voices heard, and, upraising themselves towards the Seraphim, they exclaim: blessed be the glory of Adonai from high places. From Your place shine forth, O our Sovereign, and reign over us, for we wait for You. When will You reign in Zion? Speedily, even in our days, go dwell there, and stay forever.

May You be magnified and sanctified in the midst of Jerusalem Your city throughout all generations and for all eternity. Let our eyes behold Your greatness, according to the word that was spoken in the songs of Your righteous servant David: Adonai will reign forever, Your God, O Zion, across all generations. Praise Adonai. Across all generations we will declare Your greatness, and for all eternity we will proclaim Your holiness. Your praise, O God, shall never depart from our mouths, for You are a great and holy God and Sovereign. Blessed are You, Adonai, the holy God.

And the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel forever, that in six days Adonai made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day rested, and ceased from all work.

Peace Is

CHORUS:
Peace is the bread we break
Love is the river rolling
Life is a chance we take
When we make this earth our home
Gonna make this earth our home.
Feel the cool breeze blowing through the smoke and the heat
Hear the gentle voices and the marching feet
Singing call back the fire, draw the missiles down
And we'll call this earth our home.
CHORUS
We have known the atom, the power and pain
We've seen people fall beneath the killing rain
If the mind still reasons and the soul remains
It shall never be again.
CHORUS
Peace grows from a tiny seed
As the acorn grows into the tallest tree
Many years ago I heard a soldier say
When people want peace, better get out of the way.

Torah Service

Blessings for the Reading of the Torah

The scroll of the Torah is undressed and placed upon the reading table.

The service leader calls upon each person receiving an aliyah by his/her hebrew name followed by their father/mother's name.

When called to the Torah, the service leader will point to where the upcoming reading of the Torah begins. Traditionally, the person receiving the aliyah will then touch the corner of their tallit or a piece of the Torah dressing to the margin of the upcoming reading.

Those who are called to the Torah for an Aliyah (the honor of blessing the Torah before and after the reading of the Scroll) say the following blessing before beginning:

בָּרְכוּ אֶת יְיָ הַמְבֹרָךְ.

Bar'chu et Adonai ham'vorach.

Bless Adonai, the blessed One.

The congregation responds:

Baruch Adonai hamvorach l'olam va-ed.

Blessed be Adonai, the blessed One, forever and ever.

Person receiving the Aliyah continues:

Baruch Adonai hamvorach l'olam va-ed. Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher bachar banu mikol ha-amim v'natan lanu et torato. Baruch atah Adonai, notein hatorah.

Blessed be Adonai, the blessed One, forever and ever. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has given us Your Torah. Blessed are You, Adonai, Giver of the Torah.

Torah section is read by reader.

Blessings after the Torah is Read

After the Torah portion is read, the person called for the aliyah recites the following:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר נָֽתַן לָֽנוּ תּוֹרַת אֱמֶת, וְחַיֵּי עוֹלָם נָטַע בְּתוֹכֵֽנוּ. בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, נוֹתֵן הַתּוֹרָה.

Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher natan lanu torat emet, v'chayei olam nata b'tocheinu. Baruch atah Adonai, notein hatorah.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has given us the Law of Truth, and has planted everlasting life in our midst. Blessed are You, Adonai, Giver of the Torah.

Debbie Friedman's Mi Shebeirach

The leader now asks the community for names of those who are in need of healing, both physical and spiritual. After these names are mentioned aloud, all sing the following:

מי שברך אבותינו
מקור הברכה לאמותינו.

מי שברך אמותינו
מקור הברכה לאבותינו.

Mi shebeirach avoteinu. M'kor habracha l'imoteinu.

Mi shebeirach imoteinu. M'kor habracha l'avoteinu.

May the source of strength who blessed the ones before us, Help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing. And let us say: Amen.

Bless those in need of healing with refu'ah sh'leimah. The renewal of body, the renewal of spirit. And let us say: Amen.

It is our duty to praise the Ruler of all things, to ascribe greatness to the One who formed the world in the beginning. So we bend the knee and offer worship and thanks before the supreme Sovereign of sovereigns, the Holy One, who stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth, the seat of whose glory is in the heavens above, and the residence of whose might is in the loftiest heights. Adonai is our God; there is none else: in truth Adonai is our Ruler; there is none else; as it is written in the Torah: “And you shall know this day, and lay it to your heart, that Adonai is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.”

We therefore place our hope in You, Adonai our God, that we may speedily behold the glory of Your might, when You will purify the earth, and righteousness will dominate. When the world will be perfected under the rule of the Almighty, and all the world’s children will call Your Name. When You will turn to Yourself all the evil-doers upon earth. Let all the inhabitants of the world perceive and know that to You every knee must bow, every tongue must swear allegiance. Before You, Adonai our God, let them bow and worship, and to Your glorious Name let them give honor. Let them all acceptYou and have You reign over them speedily, and forever and ever. The dominion is Yours, and for all eternity You will reign in glory. As it is written in Your Torah, “Adonai shall reign forever and ever.” And it is said, “Adonai shall be ruler over all the Earth: in that day, Adonai shall be One and God’s name shall be One.”

Mourner's Kaddish

In some communities, only those in mourning or observing a yartzheit stand and recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. However, particularly since the Holocaust, some communities have developed the practice of everyone present reciting the Kaddish on behalf of those who have no one left to say Kaddish for them.

Therefore, each individual should stand or sit as is their personal custom.

Magnified and sanctified is God’s great name in the world created according to divine will. May God’s majesty reign during your lifetime and throughout your days, and during the life of all the house of Israel, speedily and soon, and let us say, Amen.

Recited by mourners and community in unison.

Yesterday, a child came out to wonder,
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar.
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star.

CHORUS:
And the seasons they go round and round.
And the painted ponies go up and down.
We're captive on the carousel of time.
We can't return we can only look,
Behind from where we came,
And go round and round and round in the circle game.

Then the child moved ten times round the seasons.
Skated over ten clear frozen streams.

Adon olam asher malach, b'terem kol y'tzir nivra. L'eit na-asah v'cheftzo kol, azai melech sh'mo nikra.

You are the Eternal God who ruled before the creation. At the time Your will directly determined what occurred, You were already ruling.

V'acharei kichlot hakol, l'vado yimloch nora. V'hu hayah, v'hu hoveh, v'hu yihyeh, b'tifarah.

And when all else has failed, You will still reign majestically. You were, You are, You will be in glory.

V'hu echad v'ein sheini, l'hamshil lo l'hachbirah. B'li reishit b'li tachlit, v'lo ha-oz v'hamisrah.

You are only One. You do not rely upon or compare with any other. You exist without beginning or end. You know power that cannot be seen or experienced elsewhere.

V'hu eili v'chai goali, v'tzur chevli b'eit tzarah. V'hu nisi umanos li, m'nat kosi b'yom ekra.

You are my God. You are my Redeemer; my Rock when I am distressed; my confidence; my protection; my aide when I call on You.

B'yado afkid ruchi, b'eit ishan v'airah. V'im ruchi g'viyati, Adonai li v'lo ira.

I place my soul in Your hands and trust You with it night and day. I also entrust You with my body. When I have Adonai, I shall never fear.
