Preparing for the Service

Prayer for Putting on a Tallit

Wearing a Tallit is a personal choice for both men and women over the age of 13. For those who choose to wear a tallit, first inspect the tzitzis on the corners to make sure no harm has been done to them since their last usage, then fold the tallit. While holding it in position to wrap around yourself, recite the following blessing.

Blessed are You, Adonai, our God, Sovereign of the universe who hallows us with Your mitzvot, and teaches us to wrap ourselves in the fringed tallit.

Wrap yourself in the tallit.

Mah Tovu

“Mah Tovu” is a song meant to express your gratitude for being able to join in prayer. It is a sign of reverence and appreciation for the house of prayer.

How good are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel! As for me, in the abundance of Your love, I will enter Your house: I will worship toward Your holy temple out of reverence for You. Adonai, I love residing in Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells. I will worship and bow down: I will bend my knee before Adonai, my Maker. May my prayer to You, Adonai, be acceptable: God, in the abundance of Your lovingkindness, answer me with the truth of Your salvation.

Adonai is great and deserving of excessive praise. God’s greatness lasts throughout the generations. One generation shall describe Your holy acts to another, and shall declare Your acts mighty.

I will meditate on Your majestic glory, and Your marvelous deeds.

Adonai is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and full of great lovingkindness. Adonai is good to all and exudes tender mercy through God’s holy work.

Adonai is near to all who call in truth.

Chatzi Kaddish

Magnified and sanctified is God’s great name in the world created according to Divine will. May God’s majesty reign during your lifetime and throughout your days, and during the life of all the house of Israel, speedily and soon, and let us say, Amen.

Recited by the Chazzan and community in unison.

Let God’s great Name be blessed forever and to all eternity.

May the name of the Holy One be blessed, praised and glorified, exalted, extolled and honored, magnified and lauded: yet, we remember that God exists well beyond any (exceedingly beyond, in fact) the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that we say here on earth; and let us say, Amen.

Ahavah Rabbah

You have loved us with abounding love, Adonai our God. You have shown us great and overflowing tenderness. O our Master, our Ruler, for our ancestors’ sake, who trusted in You, and whom You taught the statutes of life, be also gracious to us and teach us. O Merciful One, ever compassionate, have mercy on us. Put it into our hearts to understand and to discern, to mark, learn and teach, to heed, to do and to fulfil in love all the words of instruction in Your Torah. Enlighten our eyes in Your Torah, and let our hearts cling to Your commandments, and unify our hearts. Let us love and revere Your Name, so that we will never be put to shame. Because we have trusted in Your holy, great and revered Name, we shall rejoice and be glad in Your saving power. Bring us in peace from the four corners of the earth, and make us go upright to our land, for You are a God who works salvation. You have chosen us from all peoples and tongues, (Reader) and have brought us near to Your great Name forever in faithfulness, that we might in love give thanks to You and proclaim Your unity. Blessed are You, Adonai, who has chosen Your people Israel in love.

Sh'ma שמע

The first line of the Sh'ma is recited out loud and in unison, with the right hand covering the eyes.

Hear, O Israel: Adonai is our God, Adonai is one.

In an undertone:

Blessed is God’s glory forever and ever.

V'Ahavta

And you shall love Adonai your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words, which I command you this day, shall be upon your heart: and you shall teach them diligently unto your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the door-posts of your house, and upon your gates.

Vayomer Adonai El Moshe Numbers 15:37-41

And God spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the children of Israel, and instruct them to make a fringe on the corners of their garments. On each fringe should be a blue thread to serve as a reminder. Each time you look upon it, it will bring to mind all the commandments of Adonai your God, so that you will do them without going astray. You shall remember and do all My commandments, and be holy before your God. I am Adonai your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am Adonai your God.

Mi Chamochah

Who is like you among the mighty? Who is like you glorious and holy? Who is like you revered in praise and performing wondrous miracles? With a new song the redeemed people praised Your Name at the seashore. They all gave thanks in unison, and proclaimed Your sovereignty, and said: Adonai shall reign forever and ever!

Take three steps back while saying "tzur yisrael" in preparation for the Amidah.

Rock of Israel, arise to the help of Israel, and deliver according to your promise, Judah and Israel. Our Redeemer, the Master of hosts is God's Name, the Holy One of Israel. Blessed are you, Adonai, who has redeemed Israel.

The Amidah

Avot v'Imahot

Rise for the Amidah and face the Ark.

In some communities it is customary to take three steps backward, then three steps forward and remain standing with your feet together through the entire Amidah.

Adonai, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

IN SOME COMMUNITIES IT IS CUSTOMARY TO BEGIN THIS PRAYER WITH BOWING TOWARDS THE ARK.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God and God of our ancestors: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sara, Rebecca, Leah, and Rachel. The great, mighty and revered God, the most high God, who bestows lovingkindness, and is Master over all things; who remembers the pious deeds of the patriarchs and matriarchs, and in love will redeem us for their sake. O Ruler, Helper, Saviour and Shield. Blessed are You, Adonai, the Shield of Abraham and Sara.

You sustain the living with lovingkindness, and revitalize us all with life. You support the falling, cure the sick, free the captive, and keep Your faith with those who sleep in the dust. Who is like You, Doer of mighty acts? Who resembles You, O Sovereign, who dictates between life and death, offering us salvation?
Faithful are You in revitalizing us all with life. Blessed are You, Adonai, Source of all life.

Sim Shalom

Grant peace, welfare, blessing, grace, lovingkindness and mercy to us and all Your people Israel. Bless us with the light of Your countenance; for, by the light of Your countenance, You have given us the Teaching of life, lovingkindness and righteousness, blessing, mercy, life and peace. May it be good in Your sight to bless Your people Israel at all times and in every hour with Your peace. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, who blesses Your people Israel with peace.

Oseh Shalom

In some communities it is customary to bow and take three steps backward and then three steps forward while saying Oseh Shalom below.

May the One who makes peace in high places, make peace for us and for all Israel, and let us say: Amen.

Torah Service

Ein Kamocha

Rise as we begin the Torah Service with “Ein Kamocha.”

There is none like You among the gods, O Holy One. There are no works like Yours. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your rule will endure throughout all generations

Adonai is Sovereign. Adonai was Sovereign. Adonai shall be Sovereign forever and ever. Adonai will give strength to God’s people. Adonai will bless God’s people with peace.

Compassionate One, do good with Zion according to Your will; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. For we trust you alone, O Ruler, God, exalted and uplifted, Master of Worlds.

Vayehi Binsoa Ha'aron

Ark is opened as we recite “Vay’hi Binsoa.”

When the Ark set forward, Moses said, Rise up, O Holy One, and my enemies shall be scattered. For out of Zion shall go forth the Law, and the word of Adonai from Jerusalem.

In God I put my trust, and unto God's holy and glorious Name I utter praises. May it be your will to open my heart unto your Teaching, and to fulfill the wishes of my heart and of the hearts of all your people Israel for good, for life, and for peace.

The Torah scroll is removed from the Ark and handed to the leader.

Baruch Shenatan Torah

Blessed be the One who, in holiness, gave the Torah to the people Israel.

Sh'ma Yisrael & Echad Eloheinu

The leader faces the community as the following two lines are recited responsively.

Hear, O Israel, Adonai is our God; Adonai is One.
ONE IS OUR GOD; GREAT IS OUR GOD ; HOLY IS GOD'S NAME

Gadlu l'Adonai Iti

The leader raises the Torah slightly and the community bows toward the ark as "Gadlu" is recited.

Praise the Holy One with me, and let us exalt the Name together.

The procession of the Torah to the reading table begins.

Hakafah Processional

As the Torah is carried to the table, the community recites:

To you, O God, is the greatness, the power, and the majesty. For that in the heavens and the earth is yours. You, O God, are supreme over all. Exalt Adonai our God, and worship in the holy temple; God is glorious. Exalt Adonai our God, and worship at the holy mount; for Adonai our God is holy.

Blessings for the Reading of the Torah

The scroll of the Torah is undressed and placed upon the reading table.

The service leader calls upon each person receiving an aliyah by his/her hebrew name followed by their father/mother's name.

When called to the Torah, the service leader will point to where the upcoming reading of the Torah begins. Traditionally, the person receiving the aliyah will then touch the corner of their tallit or a piece of the Torah dressing to the margin of the upcoming reading.

Those who are called to the Torah for an Aliyah (the honor of blessing the Torah before and after the reading of the Scroll) say the following blessing before beginning:

Bless Adonai, the blessed One.

The congregation responds:

Blessed be Adonai, the blessed One, forever and ever.

Person receiving the Aliyah continues:

Blessed be Adonai, the blessed One, forever and ever. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has given us Your Torah. Blessed are You, Adonai, Giver of the Torah.

Torah section is read by reader.

Blessings after the Torah is Read

After the Torah portion is read, the person called for the aliyah recites the following:

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has given us the Law of Truth, and has planted everlasting life in our midst. Blessed are You, Adonai, Giver of the Torah.

Debbie Friedman's Mi Shebeirach

The leader now asks the community for names of those who are in need of healing, both physical and spiritual. After these names are mentioned aloud, all sing the following:

May the source of strength who blessed the ones before us, Help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing. And let us say: Amen.

Bless those in need of healing with refu'ah sh'leimah. The renewal of body, the renewal of spirit. And let us say: Amen.

Haggbah (Raising the Torah)

The Torah scroll is raised for the congregation to see, exposing at least 3 columns in the scroll. While the Torah is raised, all say:

And this is the Torah which Moses set before the children of Israel, according to the commandment of the Holy One.

The Torah is redressed in preparation for the Haftarah reading.

Ye'hallelu (Returning the Torah to the Ark)

All rise as the leader of the service carries the Torah to the Ark. Remain standing until the Torah is placed in the Ark.

It is a tree of life to them that grasp it, and of them that uphold it, everyone is rendered happy. Its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all its paths are peace. Length of days is in its right hand; in its left hand are riches and honor. It pleased Adonai to magnify the Law and to glorify it.

Concluding Prayers

Aleinu

Rise for Aleinu. In all communities it is customary to bow at “va-anachnu korim” and straighten up at “modim”.

It is our duty to praise the Ruler of all things, to ascribe greatness to the One who formed the world in the beginning. So we bend the knee and offer worship and thanks before the supreme Sovereign of sovereigns, the Holy One, who stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth, the seat of whose glory is in the heavens above, and the residence of whose might is in the loftiest heights. Adonai is our God; there is none else: in truth Adonai is our Ruler; there is none else; as it is written in the Torah: “And you shall know this day, and lay it to your heart, that Adonai is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.”

We therefore place our hope in You, Adonai our God, that we may speedily behold the glory of Your might, when You will purify the earth, and righteousness will dominate. When the world will be perfected under the rule of the Almighty, and all the world’s children will call Your Name. When You will turn to Yourself all the evil-doers upon earth. Let all the inhabitants of the world perceive and know that to You every knee must bow, every tongue must swear allegiance. Before You, Adonai our God, let them bow and worship, and to Your glorious Name let them give honor. Let them all acceptYou and have You reign over them speedily, and forever and ever. The dominion is Yours, and for all eternity You will reign in glory. As it is written in Your Torah, “Adonai shall reign forever and ever.” And it is said, “Adonai shall be ruler over all the Earth: in that day, Adonai shall be One and God’s name shall be One.”

Mourner's Kaddish

In some communities, only those in mourning or observing a yartzheit stand and recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. However, particularly since the Holocaust, some communities have developed the practice of everyone present reciting the Kaddish on behalf of those who have no one left to say Kaddish for them.

Therefore, each individual should stand or sit as is their personal custom.

Magnified and sanctified is God’s great name in the world created according to divine will. May God’s majesty reign during your lifetime and throughout your days, and during the life of all the house of Israel, speedily and soon, and let us say, Amen.

Recited by mourners and community in unison.

Let God’s great Name be blessed forever and for all eternity.

Blessed, praised and glorified, exalted, extolled and honored, magnified and lauded be the Name of the Holy One, though God reigns high above all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations, which are uttered in this world; and let us say: Amen.

May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life for us and for all Israel; and let us say, Amen.

Take three steps back, bow right, left, then forward while reciting:

May the one who makes peace in high places, make peace for us and for all Israel; and let us say, Amen.

Closing Songs

Adon Olam

You are the Eternal God who ruled before the creation. At the time Your will directly determined what occurred, You were already ruling.

And when all else has failed, You will still reign majestically. You were, You are, You will be in glory.

You are only One. You do not rely upon or compare with any other. You exist without beginning or end. You know power that cannot be seen or experienced elsewhere.

You are my God. You are my Redeemer; my Rock when I am distressed; my confidence; my protection; my aide when I call on You.

I place my soul in Your hands and trust You with it night and day. I also entrust You with my body. When I have Adonai, I shall never fear.

Salaam! Od Yavo Shalom

Again peace will be upon us and everyone. Salaam, upon us and upon everyone. Salaam!
