Ein Kamocha

Rise as the Torah service begins with the singing of Ein Kamocha.

Ein kamocha va-elohim, Adonai, v'ein k'ma-asecha. Malchut'cha malchut kol olamim, umemshalt'cha b'chol dor vador. Adonai melech, Adonai malach, Adonai yimloch l'olam va-ed. Adonai oz l'amo yitein, Adonai y'vareich et amo vashalom.

There is none like You among the gods, O Holy One. There are no works like Yours. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your rule will endure throughout all generations
Adonai is Sovereign. Adonai was Sovereign. Adonai shall be Sovereign forever and ever. Adonai will give strength to God’s people. Adonai will bless God’s people with peace.

Av Ha-rachamim

When the Ark set forward, Moses said, Rise up, O Holy One, and my enemies shall be scattered. For out of Zion shall go forth the Law, and the word of Adonai from Jerusalem.

Vayehi Binsoa Ha'aron

Ark is opened as we begin “Vay’hi Binsoa.”

Vay'hi binsoa ha-aron vayomer mosheh, kumah, Adonai, v'yafutzu oy'vecha, v'yanusu m'sanecha mipanecha.

When the Ark set forward, Moses said, Rise up, O Holy One, and my enemies shall be scattered. For out of Zion shall go forth the Law, and the word of Adonai from Jerusalem.

Sh'ma Yisrael

Remove the Torah scroll from the ark and give it to the service leader.

The leader then faces the congregation as these two lines are recited responsively.

Sh'ma yisra-eil, Adonai eloheinu, Adonai echad.

ECHAD ELOHEYNU, GADOL ADONAYNU, KADOSH SHEMO.

Hear, O Israel, Adonai is our God; Adonai is One.

ONE IS OUR GOD; GREAT IS OUR LORD; HOLY IS GOD'S NAME.

Gad'lu l’Adonai iti, un'rom'mah sh'mo yachdav.

Praise the Holy One with me, and let us exalt the Name together.

The leader raises the Torah slightly and the community bows toward the ark as "Gadlu" is recited.

The procession of the Torah to the reading table begins.

L'cha Adonai HaGedulah & Procession with the Torah

The service leader turns to the right walks around the community, carrying the Torah to the reading table as the community responds:

Yours, Adonai, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is yours; yours, Adonai, is the kingdom, and the supremacy as head over all. Exalt Adonai our God, and worship in God's temple: holy is Adonai. Exalt Adonai our God, and worship at God's holy mount; for Adonai our God is holy.

Magnified and hallowed, praised and glorified, exalted and extolled above all be the Name of the Supreme Ruler of Rulers, the holy One, who is blessed, in the worlds which God created,—this world and the world to come,—in accordance with God's desire, and with the desire of them that fear God, and of all the house of Israel: the Rock everlasting, the God of all creatures, the God of all souls; who dwells in the wide-extended heights, who inhabits the heaven of heavens of old; whose holiness is above the Chayoth and above the throne of glory. Now,therefore, your Name, Adonai our God, shall be hallowed amongst us in the sight of all living. Let us sing a new song before God, as it is written, Sing unto God, sing praises unto God's Name, extol God who rides upon the heavens, whose name is Adonai, and rejoice before God. And may we see Gpd, eye to eye, when God returns to God's habitation, as it is written, For they shall see eye to eye, when Adonai returns unto Zion. And it is said, And the glory of Adonai shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of God has spoken it.

May the compassionate One have mercy on the nation born by Them, and may They remember the covenant of the spiritually mighty. May the One rescue our souls from bad times, scold the Evil Inclination to leave those borne by the One, graciously make us an eternal remnant, and fulfill our requests in good measure for redemption and mercy.

Blessing of the Torah Before Reading

The scroll of the Torah is undressed and placed upon the reading table.

The service leader calls upon each person receiving an aliyah by his/her hebrew name followed by their father/mother's name.

When called to the Torah, the service leader will point to where the upcoming reading of the Torah begins. Traditionally, the person receiving the aliyah will then touch the corner of their tallit or a piece of the Torah dressing to the margin of the upcoming reading.

Those who are called to the Torah for an Aliyah (the honor of blessing the Torah before and after the reading of the Scroll) say the following blessing before beginning:

Bar'chu et Adonai hamvorach.

Baruch Adonai hamvorach l'olam va-ed.

Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher bachar banu mikol ha-amim v'natan lanu et torato. Baruch atah Adonai, notein hatorah.

Blessed is Adonai who is to be praised.

Blessed is Adonai who is to praised for ever and ever.

Blessed are you Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe who chose us from all the nations and gave us your Torah. Blessed are you Adonai, Giver of the Torah.

Blessing of the Torah After Reading

After the Torah portion is read, the person called for the aliyah recites the following:

Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher natan lanu torat emet, v'chayei olam nata b'tocheinu. Baruch atah Adonai, notein ha Torah.

Blessed are you Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe who gave us a Torah of truth and through it gave us eternal life. Blessed are you Adonai, Giver of the Torah.

May salvation from heaven, with grace, lovingkindness, mercy, long life, ample sustenance, heavenly aid, health of body, a higher enlightenment, and a living and abiding offspring, that will not break with, nor neglect any of the words of the Torah, be granted unto the teachers and rabbis of the holy community, who are in the land of Israel, and in the land of Babylon, and in all the lands of our dispersion; unto the heads of the academies, the chiefs of the captivity, the heads of the colleges, and the judges in the gates; unto all their disciples, unto all the disciples of their disciples, and unto all who occupy themselves with the study of the Torah. May the Ruler of the universe bless them, prolong their lives, increase their days, and add to their years, and may they be saved and delivered from every trouble and mishap. May the God of heaven be their help at all times and seasons; and let us say, Amen.

May salvation arise from heaven-grace, kindness, compassion, long life, abundant sustenance, heavenly assistance, physical well-being, lofty vision, living and healthy offspring who will neither interrupt nor cease from the world of Torah- to this entire holy community, adults along with children, infants and women. May the Ruler of the Universe bless you, make your lives fruitful, increase your days, and lengthen your years. May the Ruler of the Universe save you from every distress and from all serious ailments. May the Master in Heaven come to your assistance at every season and time. And let us say, Amen.

God who blessed our forefathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may God bless this entire holy community along with all the holy communities; them, their wives, sons, and daughters and all that is theirs; and those who dedicate synagogues for prayer and those who enter them to pray, and those who give lamps for illumination and wine for Kiddush and Havdalah, bread for guests and charity for the poor; and all who are involved faithfully in the needs of the community - (Reader) may the Holy One, Blessed is God, pay their reward and remove from them every affliction, heal their entire body and forgive their iniquities, and send blessing and success to all their handiwork, along with all Israel, their brethren. I will extol you, my God, O Sovereign; and I will bless your Name for ever and ever. Every day will I bless you; and I will praise your Name for ever and ever. Great is Adonai, and exceedingly to be praised: and God's greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall laud your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. On the majestic glory of your splendor, and on your marvelous deeds, will I meditate. And people shall speak of the might of your tremendous acts; and I will recount your greatness. They shall pour forth the fame of your great goodness, and shall exult in your righteousness. Adonai is gracious and merciful; slow to anger and of great lovingkindness. Adonai is good to all; and God's tender mercies are over all God's works. All your works shall give thanks unto you, Adonai; and your loving ones shall bless thee. They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom, and talk of your power; to make known to the human beings God's mighty acts, and the majestic glory of God's kingdom. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. Adonai upholds all that fall, and raises up all those that are bowed down. The eyes of all wait upon you; and you give them their food in due season. You open your hand, and satisfy every living thing with favor. Adonai is righteous in all ways, and loving in all works. Adonai is close unto all them that call upon God, to all that call upon God in truth. Adonai will fulfill the desire of them that revere God; God also will hear their cry, and will save them. Adonai guards all those that love God; but all the wicked will God destroy. (Reader) My mouth shall speak of the praise of Adonai; and let all flesh bless God's holy Name for ever and ever.

But we will bless Adonai from this time forth and for evermore. Praise Adonai.

Cong.—BLESSED BE THE GLORY OF ADONAI FROM GOD'S PLACE.

Reader.—From God's place may Adonai turn in mercy and be gracious unto a people who, evening and morning, twice every day, proclaim with constancy the unity of God's Name, saying in love, Hear—

Reader.—One is our God; Adonai is our Parent; Adonai is our King; Adonai is our Savior; and God in mercy will let us hear a second time, in the presence of all living (God's promise), “To be to you for a God.”

Elohai, n'tzor l'shoni meira, us'fatai midabeir mirmah, v'limkal'lai nafshi tidom, v'nafshi ke-afar lakol tihyeh. P'tach libi b'toratecha, uv'mitzvatecha tirdof nafshi. L'ma-an yeichal'tzun y'didecha, hoshi-ah y'min'cha va-aneini. Yihyu l'ratzon imrei fi v'hegyon libi l'fanecha, Adonai tzuri v'goali. Oseh shalom

Y'hi ratzon mil'fanecha, Adonai Eloheinu veilohei avoteinu, sheyibaneh beit hamikdash bimheirah v'yameinu, v'tein chelkeinu b'toratecha, v'sham na-avad'cha b'yirah kimei olam uch'shanim kadmoniyot. V'ar'vah l'Adonai minchat y'hudah virushalayim, kimei olam uch'shanim kadmoniyot.

O my God! Guard my tongue from evil and my lips from speaking guile; and to such as curse me let my soul be dumb, yes, let my soul be unto all as the dust. Open my heart to your Torah, and let my soul pursue your commandments. If any design evil against me, speedily make their counsel of no effect, and frustrate their designs. Do it for the sake of your Name, do it for the sake of your power, do it for the sake of your holiness, do it for the sake of your Torah. In order that your beloved ones may be delivered, O save by your power, and answer me. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before you, Adonai, my Rock and my Redeemer. God who makes peace in high places, may God make peace for us and for all Israel, and say you, Amen.

May it be your will, Adonai our God and God of our ancestors, that the temple be speedily rebuilt in our days, and grant our portion in your Torah. And there we will serve you with awe, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto Adonai, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years.

Reader Now Repeats the Musaf Amidah out loud and adds the Kedusha.

Aleinu

It is customary to bow at “va-anachnu korim” and stand up at “modim.”

It is our duty to praise the Ruler of all things, to ascribe greatness to the One who formed the world in the beginning. So we bend the knee and offer worship and thanks before the supreme Sovereign of sovereigns, the Holy One, who stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth, the seat of whose glory is in the heavens above, and the residence of whose might is in the loftiest heights. Adonai is our God; there is none else: in truth Adonai is our Ruler; there is none else; as it is written in the Torah: “And you shall know this day, and lay it to your heart, that Adonai is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath: there is none else."

We therefore place our hope in You, Adonai our God, that we may speedily behold the glory of Your might, when You will purify the earth, and righteousness will dominate. When the world will be perfected under the rule of the Almighty, and all the world’s children will call Your Name. When You will turn to Yourself all the evil-doers upon earth. Let all the inhabitants of the world perceive and know that to You every knee must bow, every tongue must swear allegiance. Before You, Adonai our God, let them bow and worship, and to Your glorious Name let them give honor. Let them all accept You and have You reign over them speedily, and forever and ever. The dominion is Yours, and for all eternity You will reign in glory. As it is written in Your Torah, “Adonai shall reign forever and ever.” And it is said, “Adonai shall be ruler over all the Earth: in that day, Adonai shall be One and God’s name shall be One.”

Mourner's Kaddish

In some communities, only those in mourning or observing a yartzheit stand and recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. However, particularly since the Holocaust, some communities have developed the practice of everyone present reciting the Kaddish on behalf of those who have no one left to say Kaddish for them.

Therefore, each individual should stand or sit as is their personal custom.

The community responds amen throughout.

Closing Songs

Adon Olam

Adon olam asher malach, b'terem kol y'tzir nivra. L'eit na-asah v'cheftzo kol, azai melech sh'mo nikra.

You are the Eternal God who ruled before the creation. At the time Your will directly determined what occurred, You were already ruling.

V'acharei kichlot hakol, l'vado yimloch nora. V'hu hayah, v'hu hoveh, v'hu yihyeh, b'tifarah.

And when all else has failed,
You will still reign majestically.
You were, You are,
You will be in glory.

V'hu echad v'ein sheini,
l'hamshil lo l'hachbirah.
B'li reishit b'li tachlit,
v'lo ha-oz v'hamisrah.

You are only One. You do not rely upon or compare with any other. You exist without beginning or end. You know power that cannot be seen or experienced elsewhere.

V'hu eili v'chai goali,
v'tzur chevli b'eit tzarah.
V'hu nisi umanos li,
m'nat kosi b'yom ekra.

You are my God. You are my Redeemer; my Rock when I am distressed; my confidence; my protection; my aide when I call on You.

B'yado afkid ruchi,
b'eit ishan v'a'irah.
V'im ruchi g'viyati,
Adonai li v'lo ira.

I place my soul in Your hands and trust You with it night and day. I also entrust You with my body. When I have Adonai, I shall never fear.

Salaam! Od Yavo Shalom
