Elections Training Conclave '10: Meditation Service

A Custom Saturday Morning Service by Jeremy Sherman

Preparing for the Service

Star of David

Introduction

Contains personal content

Claire: Welcome to ETC meditation service. Each jew has their own spiritual individuality. We believe in G-d differently, and extract different messages from the same prayers. Even though we all have our separate beliefs, meditation has the ability to bring us together spiritually.

Jeremy: Take this next hour as a time to chill out and relax. Just get your mind off this past week and all the stress you might of experienced, and try to take meaning of the prayers we sing. Even if you don't know the prayer, try closing your eyes and visualizing something peaceful, because that's what meditation is all about.

Jon: meditation #1

—————

Jon: Mah Tovu is all about entering G-d's house. This is the time to start to focusing on the prayers and entering a true state of meditation.

(recite prayer with eyes closed)

Opening Songs

Mah Tovu

“Mah Tovu” is a song meant to express your gratitude for being able to join in prayer. It is a sign of reverence and appreciation for the house of prayer.

Mah tovu ohalecha ya-akov, mishk'notecha yisra-eil. Va-ani b'rov chasd'cha avo veitecha, eshtachaveh el heichol kodsh'cha b'yiratecha. Adonai ahavti m'on beitecha, um'kom mishkan k'vodecha. Va-ani eshtachaveh v'echra-ah, evr'chah lifnei Adonai osi. Va-ani t'filati l'cha Adonai, eit ratzon, elohim b'rav chasdecha, aneini be-emet yishecha.

How good are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel! As for me, in the abundance of Your love, I will enter Your house: I will worship toward Your holy temple out of reverence for You. Adonai, I love residing in Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells. I will worship and bow down: I will bend my knee before Adonai, my Maker. May my prayer to You, Adonai, be acceptable: God, in the abundance of Your lovingkindness, answer me with the truth of Your salvation.

Magnified and sanctified is God’s great name in the world created according to Divine will. May God’s majesty reign during your lifetime and throughout your days, and during the life of all the house of Israel , speedily and soon, and let us say, Amen.

Recited by the Chazzan and community in unison.

Bar'chu

Contains personal content

Claire: The Barchu is an invitation to acknowledge or recognize God, and signifies the beginning of the most important part of the service

Jeremy: Before we dive into the most important parts of our meditation service this morning, we have to get even more relaxed, even more chill, and even more in touch with our spirituality. This is the time to really get away from the outside world, and exclude all your stresses.

Blessed are you, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who forms light and creates darkness, who makes peace and creates all things:

All shall thank you, and all shall praise you, and all shall say, There is none holy like Adonai. All shall extol you forever, you Creator of all things, O God who opens every day the door of the gates of the East, and cleaves the windows of the firmament, leading forth the sun from its place, and the moon from its dwelling, giving light to the whole world and to its inhabitants whom you created by the attribute of mercy. In mercy you gave light to the earth and to them that dwell thereon, and in your goodness renew the creation every day continually; O Sovereign, who alone was exalted from aforetime, praised, glorified and extolled from days of old. O everlasting God, in your abundant mercies, have mercy upon us, God of our strength, Rock of our stronghold, Shield of our salvation, you Stronghold of ours! There is none to be compared unto you, neither is there any beside you; there is none but you: (Reader) There is none to be compared unto you, O Adonai our God, in this world, neither is there any beside you, O our Ruler, for the life of the world to come; there is none but you, O our Redeemer, for the days of the Messiah; neither is there any like unto you, O our Savior, for the revival of the dead.

The community sings this prayer along with the reader.

God, the Master of all works is ever to be blessed by the mouth of everything that has breath. God’s greatness and goodness fill the universe, surrounded by knowledge and understanding. God is exalted above everything else holy and is adorned in glory above the celestial chariot. Purity and integrity lie before God’s throne, lovingkindness and tender mercy before glory. The luminaries that God created are good: they were formed with knowledge, understanding and discernment. God gave them might and power to rule in the midst of the world. They are full of luster, and they radiate brightness: beautiful is their lustre throughout all the world. They rejoice in their commencement, and are glad in their returning; they perform with awe the will of their Master. Glory and honour they render unto God’s Name, exultation and rejoicing at the fame of God’s sovereignty. God called unto the sun, and it shone forth in light: God looked, and ordained the figure of the moon. All the hosts on high render praise unto God, the Seraphim, the Ophanim and the holy Chayoth ascribing glory and greatness.

To the God who rested from all works, and on the seventh day was exalted and sat upon a throne of glory. With beauty the day of rest was robed, and called the Sabbath day a delight. This is the great distinction of the Sabbath day, that God rested thereon from all work, when the Sabbath day itself offered praise and said “A Psalm, a song of the Sabbath day, It is good to give thanks unto Adonai”. Therefore let all God's creatures glorify and bless God; let them render praise, honor and greatness to the God and Sovereign who is Creator of all things, and who, in holiness, gives an inheritance of rest to the people of Israel on the holy Sabbath day. Your Name, O Adonai our God, shall be hallowed, and your fame, O our Ruler, shall be proclaimed in heaven above and on the earth beneath. Be you blessed, O our Savior, for the excellency of your handiwork, and for the bright luminaries which you have made: they shall glorify you for ever.

May you be blessed, our Rock, our Ruler and Redeemer, Creator of holy ones. May your name be praised forever, our Sovereign, creator of ministering angels. All of whose ministering angels stand at the summit of the universe and proclaim -- with awe, together, loudly -- the words of the living God and Ruler of universe. (Reader) They are all beloved, they are all flawless, they are all mighty, they all do the will of their Maker with dread and reverence. And they all open their mouths in holiness and purity, in song and hymn, and bless, praise, glorify, revere, sanctify, and declare the sovereignty of --

The Name of the Divine Ruler, the great, mighty and dreaded One, holy is God; and they all take upon themselves the yoke of the kingdom of heaven one from the other, and give leave one unto the other to declare the holiness of their Creator: (Reader) in tranquil joy of spirit, with pure speech and holy melody they all respond in unison, and exclaim with awe:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY IS ADONAI OF HOSTS: THE WHOLE EARTH IS FULL OF GOD'S GLORY.
(Reader) And the Ophanim and the holy Chayot with a noise of great rushing, upraising themselves towards the Seraphim, thus over against them offer praise and say:
BLESSED BE THE GLORY OF ADONAI FROM GOD'S PLACE.

To the blessed God they offer melodious strains; to the Ruler, the living and ever-existing God, they utter hymns and make their praises heard; for God alone works mighty deeds, and makes new things; God is the Ruler over struggle, sowing righteousness, and reaping victory. God creates healing, and is revered in praises. Adonai is the God of wonders, who in goodness renews the creation every day continually; as it is said, (O give thanks) to God that makes great lights, for God's lovingkindness endures for ever. (Reader) O cause a new light to shine upon Zion, and may we all be worthy soon to enjoy its brightness. Blessed are you, Adonai, Creator of the luminaries.

Sh'ma

Contains personal content

Becca: The Shema is considered to be the most important prayer in Judaism. But that also means it’s the most spiritual, the most meaningful, and the most powerful. Take the time now to think of the past week: What was something wonderful that happened? What was something that stressed you out?

Jeremy: Cover your eyes with a “Shin” [symbolizes God] and take in huge breath of air between each word and hold it out until all the air gone… clear your mind of everything but the Shema and meditation.

Sh'ma שמע

The first line of the Sh'ma is recited out loud and in unison, with the right hand covering the eyes.

Sh'ma Yisra-eil, Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad.

Hear, O Israel: Adonai is our God, Adonai is one.

In an undertone:

And you shall love Adonai your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words, which I command you this day, shall be upon your heart: and you shall teach them diligently unto your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the door-posts of your house, and upon your gates.

And it shall come to pass, if you shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love Adonai your God, and to serve God with all your heart and with all your soul, that I will give the rain of your land in its season, the former rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your corn, and your wine, and your oil. And I will give grass in thy field for your cattle, and you shall eat and be satisfied. Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; and the anger of Adonai be kindled against you, and God shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and you perish quickly from off the good land which Adonai gave you. Therefore shall you lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul; and you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall teach them your children, talking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house, and upon your gates: that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, upon the land which Adonai swore unto your ancestors to give them, as the days of the heavens above the earth.

And Adonai spoke to Moses, saying. Speak to the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them a fringe upon the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of each corner a cord of blue: and it shall be for you for a fringe, that you may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of Adonai, and do them: and that you go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you go astray: that you may remember and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God. I am Adonai your God, who brought you out of the Land of Egypt, to be your God: I am Adonai your God.

Mi Chamochah

Contains personal content

Jeremy: When the Israelites crossed the Red Sea after being slaves in Egypt, they began singing Mi Chamocha, asking God who else among Gods is like him! They were so happy that they had just been saved from slavery, and they sang this song full of joy!

Claire: Raise your hand if you had a test or an AP exam this past week

Jon: Now raise your hand if you were stressed out about those tests or exams?

Becca; Well APs are over, and we're gonna celebrate. Join us in singing Mi Chamocha in the style of Miriam's Song.

Mi chamochah ba-eilim Adonai, mi kamochah nedar bakodesh, nora t'hilot, oseih fele. Shirah chadashah shib'chu g'ulim l'shimcha al s'fat hayam, yachad kulam hodu v'himlichu v'am'ru: Adonai yimloch l'olam va-ed.

Who is like you among the mighty? Who is like you glorious and holy? Who is like you revered in praise and performing wondrous miracles? With a new song the redeemed people praised Your Name at the seashore. They all gave thanks in unison, and proclaimed Your sovereignty, and said: Adonai shall reign forever and ever!

The Amidah

Avot אבות

Rise for the Amidah and face the Ark.

In some communities it is customary to take three steps backward, then three steps forward and remain standing with your feet together through the entire Amidah.

[In some communities, it is customary to insert the names of the matriarchs included here in brackets.]

IN SOME COMMUNITIES IT IS CUSTOMARY TO BEGIN THIS PRAYER WITH BOWING TOWARDS THE ARK.

Adonai, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

IN SOME COMMUNITIES IT IS CUSTOMARY TO BEGIN THIS PRAYER WITH BOWING TOWARDS THE ARK.
Blessed are You, Adonai our God and God of our ancestors: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, [Sarah, Rebecca, Leah, and Rachel]. The great, mighty and revered God, the most high God, who bestows lovingkindness, and is Master over all things; who remembers the pious deeds of the patriarchs and matriarchs, and in love will redeem us for their sake.

O Sovereign, Helper, Savior and Shield. Blessed are You, Adonai, the Shield of Abraham [and Sarah].

We will sanctify Your Name in the world, even as they sanctify It in the highest heavens, as it is written by the hand of Your prophet: And they called to each other and said: holy, holy, holy is Adonai above all. The whole earth radiates God’s glory. Then with a noise of great rushing, mighty and strong, they make their voices heard, and, upraising themselves towards the Seraphim, they exclaim: blessed be the glory of Adonai from high places. From Your place shine forth, O our Sovereign, and reign over us, for we wait for You. When will You reign in Zion? Speedily, even in our days, go dwell there, and stay forever.

May You be magnified and sanctified in the midst of Jerusalem Your city throughout all generations and for all eternity. Let our eyes behold Your greatness, according to the word that was spoken in the songs of Your righteous servant David: Adonai will reign forever, Your God, O Zion, across all generations. Praise Adonai. Across all generations we will declare Your greatness, and for all eternity we will proclaim Your holiness. Your praise, O God, shall never depart from our mouths, for You are a great and holy God and Sovereign. Blessed are You, Adonai, the holy God.

You are holy, and Your Name is holy, and the holy praise You daily. Blessed are You, Adonai, the holy God.

Jon: Oseh Shalom is song we sing quite often, especially in the Birkat Hamazon which we recite at every meal.

Claire: Most times however, we take Oseh Shalom for granted and forget just how meaningful and important it is.

Becca: Oseh Shalom is especially important now with everything that goes on in Middle East , and it's so important that we pray for peace for not only everyone in Israel, but for all the Middle East.

Jeremy: If you've been to Israel, what's your favorite place?

It is our duty to praise the Ruler of all things, to ascribe greatness to the One who formed the world in the beginning. So we bend the knee and offer worship and thanks before the supreme Sovereign of sovereigns, the Holy One, who stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth, the seat of whose glory is in the heavens above, and the residence of whose might is in the loftiest heights. Adonai is our God; there is none else: in truth Adonai is our Ruler; there is none else; as it is written in the Torah: “And you shall know this day, and lay it to your heart, that Adonai is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath: there is none else."

We therefore place our hope in You, Adonai our God, that we may speedily behold the glory of Your might, when You will purify the earth, and righteousness will dominate. When the world will be perfected under the rule of the Almighty, and all the world’s children will call Your Name. When You will turn to Yourself all the evil-doers upon earth. Let all the inhabitants of the world perceive and know that to You every knee must bow, every tongue must swear allegiance. Before You, Adonai our God, let them bow and worship, and to Your glorious Name let them give honor. Let them all accept You and have You reign over them speedily, and forever and ever. The dominion is Yours, and for all eternity You will reign in glory. As it is written in Your Torah, “Adonai shall reign forever and ever.” And it is said, “Adonai shall be ruler over all the Earth: in that day, Adonai shall be One and God’s name shall be One.”

Mourner's Kaddish

Contains personal content

Jon: Mourner's Kaddish is a prayer we say when we lose a loved one, but ever since the Holocaust, Jews all over the world say the Mourner's Kaddish for those who never had someone to say it for them.

Becca: Sit or stand for the Mourner's Kaddish according to your custom. Even if you don't have a loved one who has passed away, think of the Jews who died during the Holocaust only 60 years ago.

In some communities, only those in mourning or observing a yartzheit stand and recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. However, particularly since the Holocaust, some communities have developed the practice of everyone present reciting the Kaddish on behalf of those who have no one left to say Kaddish for them.

Therefore, each individual should stand or sit as is their personal custom.

The community responds amen throughout.

Closing Songs

Adon Olam

Adon olam asher malach, b'terem kol y'tzir nivra. L'eit na-asah v'cheftzo kol, azai melech sh'mo nikra.

You are the Eternal God who ruled before the creation. At the time Your will directly determined what occurred, You were already ruling.

V'acharei kichlot hakol, l'vado yimloch nora. V'hu hayah, v'hu hoveh, v'hu yihyeh, b'tifarah.

And when all else has failed,
You will still reign majestically.
You were, You are,
You will be in glory.

V'hu echad v'ein sheini,
l'hamshil lo l'hachbirah.
B'li reishit b'li tachlit,
v'lo ha-oz v'hamisrah.

You are only One. You do not rely upon or compare with any other. You exist without beginning or end. You know power that cannot be seen or experienced elsewhere.

V'hu eili v'chai goali,
v'tzur chevli b'eit tzarah.
V'hu nisi umanos li,
m'nat kosi b'yom ekra.

You are my God. You are my Redeemer; my Rock when I am distressed; my confidence; my protection; my aide when I call on You.

B'yado afkid ruchi,
b'eit ishan v'a'irah.
V'im ruchi g'viyati,
Adonai li v'lo ira.

I place my soul in Your hands and trust You with it night and day. I also entrust You with my body. When I have Adonai, I shall never fear.

Salaam! Od Yavo Shalom

Od yavo shalom aleinu (3x)
v’al kulam.

Salaam, aleinu v’al kol ha’olam!
Salaam! Salaam! (2x)

Again peace will be upon us and everyone. Salaam, upon us and upon everyone. Salaam!

Hey Jude by The Beatles

Contains personal content

Hey Jude don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

Hey Jude don't be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better

And any time you feel the pain, Hey Jude, refrain
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder
Da da da da da
da da da da

Hey Jude don't let me down
You have found her now go and get her
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

So let it out and let it in
Hey Jude begin
You're waiting for someone to perform with
And don't you know that it's just you
Hey Jude you'll do
The movement you need is on your shoulder

Da da da da da
da da da da Yeah

Hey Jude don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her under your skin
Then you'll begin to make it better
Better, better, better, better, better, Yeah,Yeah,Yeah
