Mah Tovu

“Mah Tovu” is a song meant to express your gratitude for being able to join in prayer. It is a sign of reverence and appreciation for the house of prayer.

Mah tovu ohalecha ya-akov, mishk'notecha yisra-eil. Va-ani b'rov chasd'cha avo veitecha, eshtachaveh el heichol kodsh'cha b'yiratecha. Adonai ahavti m'on beitecha, um'kom mishkan k'vodecha. Va-ani eshtachaveh v'echra-ah, evr'chah lifnei Adonai osi. Va-ani t'filati l'cha Adonai, eit ratzon, elohim b'rav chasdecha, aneini be-emet yishecha.

How good are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel! As for me, in the abundance of Your love, I will enter Your house: I will worship toward Your holy temple out of reverence for You. Adonai, I love residing in Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells. I will worship and bow down: I will bend my knee before Adonai, my Maker. May my prayer to You, Adonai, be acceptable: God, in the abundance of Your lovingkindness, answer me with the truth of Your salvation.

And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the door-posts of your house, and upon your gates.

With a new song the redeemed people praised Your Name at the seashore. They all gave thanks in unison, and proclaimed Your sovereignty, and said: Adonai shall reign forever and ever!

Take three steps back while saying "tzur yisrael" in preparation for the Amidah.

The great, mighty and revered God, the most high God, who bestows lovingkindness, and is Master over all things; who remembers the pious deeds of the patriarchs and matriarchs, and in love will redeem us for their sake. O Ruler, Helper, Saviour and Shield. Blessed are You, Adonai, the Shield of Abraham and Sara.

Kedusha

In some communities it is customary to rise up on your toes each time you say “Kadosh,” and at “Baruch.”

We will sanctify Your Name in the world, even as they sanctify It in the highest heavens, as it is written by the hand of Your prophet: And they called to each other and said: holy, holy, holy is Adonai above all. The whole earth radiates God’s glory. Then with a noise of great rushing, mighty and strong, they make their voices heard, and, upraising themselves towards the Seraphim, they exclaim: blessed be the glory of Adonai from high places. From Your place shine forth, O our Sovereign, and reign over us, for we wait for You. When will You reign in Zion? Speedily, even in our days, go dwell there, and stay forever.

May You be magnified and sanctified in the midst of Jerusalem Your city throughout all generations and for all eternity. Let our eyes behold Your greatness, according to the word that was spoken in the songs of Your righteous servant David: Adonai will reign forever, Your God, O Zion, across all generations. Praise Adonai. Across all generations we will declare Your greatness, and for all eternity we will proclaim Your holiness. Your praise, O God, shall never depart from our mouths, for You are a great and holy God and Sovereign. Blessed are You, Adonai, the holy God.

Vayehi Binsoa Ha'aron

Ark is opened as we recite “Vay’hi Binsoa.”

When the Ark set forward, Moses said, Rise up, O Holy One, and my enemies shall be scattered. For out of Zion shall go forth the Law, and the word of Adonai from Jerusalem.

The Torah scroll is removed from the Ark and handed to the leader.

Gadlu l'Adonai Iti

The leader raises the Torah slightly and the community bows toward the ark as "Gadlu" is recited.

Gad'lu l’Adonai iti, un'rom'mah sh'mo yachdav.

Praise the Holy One with me, and let us exalt the Name together.

The procession of the Torah to the reading table begins.

Hakafah Processional

As the Torah is carried to the table, the community recites:

Blessings for the Reading of the Torah

The scroll of the Torah is undressed and placed upon the reading table.

The service leader calls upon each person receiving an aliyah by his/her hebrew name followed by their father/mother's name.

When called to the Torah, the service leader will point to where the upcoming reading of the Torah begins. Traditionally, the person receiving the aliyah will then touch the corner of their tallit or a piece of the Torah dressing to the margin of the upcoming reading.

Those who are called to the Torah for an Aliyah (the honor of blessing the Torah before and after the reading of the Scroll) say the following blessing before beginning:

Bar'chu et Adonai ham'vorach.

Bless Adonai, the blessed One.

The congregation responds:

Baruch Adonai hamvorach l'olam va-ed.

Blessed be Adonai, the blessed One, forever and ever.

Person receiving the Aliyah continues:

Baruch Adonai hamvorach l'olam va-ed. Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher bachar banu mikol ha-amim v'natan lanu et torato. Baruch atah Adonai, notein hatorah.

Blessed be Adonai, the blessed One, forever and ever. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has given us Your Torah. Blessed are You, Adonai, Giver of the Torah.

Torah section is read by reader.

Blessings after the Torah is Read

After the Torah portion is read, the person called for the aliyah recites the following:

Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher natan lanu torat emet, v'chayei olam nata b'tocheinu. Baruch atah Adonai, notein hatorah.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has given us the Law of Truth, and has planted everlasting life in our midst. Blessed are You, Adonai, Giver of the Torah.

Debbie Friedman's Mi Shebeirach

The leader now asks the community for names of those who are in need of healing, both physical and spiritual. After these names are mentioned aloud, all sing the following:

Mi shebeirach avoteinu. M'kor habracha l'imoteinu.

Mi shebeirach imoteinu. M'kor habracha l'avoteinu.

May the source of strength who blessed the ones before us, Help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing. And let us say: Amen.

Bless those in need of healing with refu'ah sh'leimah. The renewal of body, the renewal of spirit. And let us say: Amen.

Haggbah (Raising the Torah)

The Torah scroll is raised for the congregation to see, exposing at least 3 columns in the scroll. While the Torah is raised, all say:

V'zot hatorah asher sam mosheh lifnei b'nei yisra-eil, al pi Adonai b'yad mosheh.

And this is the Torah which Moses set before the children of Israel, according to the commandment of the Holy One.

The Torah is redressed in preparation for the Haftarah reading.

The Haftarah is read in Hebrew or English.

Gladden us, Adonai our God, with Your servant Elijah the prophet, and with the the house of Your anointed David. Soon may he come and rejoice our hearts. Suffer not a stranger to sit upon his throne, nor let others any longer inherit his glory; for by Your holy Name You swore to him, that his light should not be quenched forever. Blessed are You, Adonai, the Shield of David.

For the Torah, for the divine service, for the prophets, and for this Sabbath day, which You, Adonai our God, have given us for holiness and for rest, honor and glory—for all these we thank and bless You, Adonai our God. Blessed be Your Name by the mouth of every living being continually and forever. Blessed are You, Adonai, who hallows the Sabbath.

Ye'hallelu (Returning the Torah to the Ark)

All rise as the leader of the service carries the Torah to the Ark. Remain standing until the Torah is placed in the Ark.

Yehallelu et shem Adonai, ki nisgov shemo l’vadoe. Hodo al eretz v’shamyaim, vayaren keren lamo, tehillah lachol chasidov, livney Yisrael am kerovoe, hallelulah.

It is a tree of life to them that grasp it, and of them that uphold it, everyone is rendered happy. Its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all its paths are peace. Length of days is in its right hand; in its left hand are riches and honor. It pleased Adonai to magnify the Law and to glorify it.

Concluding Prayers

Aleinu

Rise for Aleinu. In all communities it is customary to bow at “va-anachnu korim” and straighten up at “modim”.

It is our duty to praise the Ruler of all things, to ascribe greatness to the One who formed the world in the beginning. So we bend the knee and offer worship and thanks before the supreme Sovereign of sovereigns, the Holy One, who stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth, the seat of whose glory is in the heavens above, and the residence of whose might is in the loftiest heights. Adonai is our God; there is none else: in truth Adonai is our Ruler; there is none else; as it is written in the Torah: “And you shall know this day, and lay it to your heart, that Adonai is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.”

We therefore place our hope in You, Adonai our God, that we may speedily behold the glory of Your might, when You will purify the earth, and righteousness will dominate. When the world will be perfected under the rule of the Almighty, and all the world’s children will call Your Name. When You will turn to Yourself all the evil-doers upon earth. Let all the inhabitants of the world perceive and know that to You every knee must bow, every tongue must swear allegiance. Before You, Adonai our God, let them bow and worship, and to Your glorious Name let them give honor. Let them all acceptYou and have You reign over them speedily, and forever and ever. The dominion is Yours, and for all eternity You will reign in glory. As it is written in Your Torah, “Adonai shall reign forever and ever.” And it is said, “Adonai shall be ruler over all the Earth: in that day, Adonai shall be One and God’s name shall be One.”

Mourner's Kaddish

In some communities, only those in mourning or observing a yartzheit stand and recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. However, particularly since the Holocaust, some communities have developed the practice of everyone present reciting the Kaddish on behalf of those who have no one left to say Kaddish for them.

Therefore, each individual should stand or sit as is their personal custom.

Magnified and sanctified is God’s great name in the world created according to divine will. May God’s majesty reign during your lifetime and throughout your days, and during the life of all the house of Israel, speedily and soon, and let us say, Amen.

Recited by mourners and community in unison.

Y'hei sh'meih raba m'varach l'alam ul'al'mei al'maya.

Let God’s great Name be blessed forever and for all eternity.

Blessed, praised and glorified, exalted, extolled and honored, magnified and lauded be the Name of the Holy One, though God reigns high above all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations, which are uttered in this world; and let us say: Amen.

May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life for us and for all Israel; and let us say, Amen.

Take three steps back, bow right, left, then forward while reciting:

You are the One to whom our ancestors offered spices.

Adon Olam

Adon olam asher malach, b'terem kol y'tzir nivra. L'eit na-asah v'cheftzo kol, azai melech sh'mo nikra.

You are the Eternal God who ruled before the creation. At the time Your will directly determined what occurred, You were already ruling.

V'acharei kichlot hakol, l'vado yimloch nora. V'hu hayah, v'hu hoveh, v'hu yihyeh, b'tifarah.

And when all else has failed, You will still reign majestically. You were, You are, You will be in glory.

V'hu echad v'ein sheini, l'hamshil lo l'hachbirah. B'li reishit b'li tachlit, v'lo ha-oz v'hamisrah.

You are only One. You do not rely upon or compare with any other. You exist without beginning or end. You know power that cannot be seen or experienced elsewhere.

V'hu eili v'chai goali, v'tzur chevli b'eit tzarah. V'hu nisi umanos li, m'nat kosi b'yom ekra.

You are my God. You are my Redeemer; my Rock when I am distressed; my confidence; my protection; my aide when I call on You.

B'yado afkid ruchi, b'eit ishan v'airah. V'im ruchi g'viyati, Adonai li v'lo ira.

I place my soul in Your hands and trust You with it night and day. I also entrust You with my body. When I have Adonai, I shall never fear.

Yigdal

Yigdal elohim chai v'yishtabach, nimtza, v'ein eit el m'tziuto. Echad v'ein yachid k'yichudo, nelam, v'gam ein sof l'achduto.

We praise, exalt, and adore the living God! God was, God is, God will be evermore! God is unique in the unity of One: eternal, inconceivable is God.

Ein lo d'mut haguf v'eino guf, lo na-aroch eilav k'dushato. Kadmon l'chol davar ashar nivra, rishon v'ein reishit l'reishito.

No form, or shape even compares with the incorporeal One, blessed God. God was at creation. The Eternal One saw no beginning in heaven, or earth, but instead knows only a timeless existence..

Hino adon olam l'chol notzar, yoreh g'dulato umalchuto. Shefa n'vuato n'tano, el anshei s'gulato v'tifarto.

God is known as Sovereign of the Universe, teaching of Holy power to the beings crafted by the Holy One personally. God gave the gift of prophecy to those who experience God’s glory.

Lo kam b'yisra-eil k'mosheh od, navi umabit et t'munato. Torat emet natan l'amo eil, al yad n'vio ne-eman beito.

No prophet ever yet has filled the place of Moses. Through him (the faithful in God’s house) God gave the law of truth to Israel.

Lo yachalif ha-eil v'lo yamir dato, l'olamim, l'zulato. Tzofeh v'yodei-a s'tareinu, mabit l'sof davar b'kadmato. Gomeil l'ish chesed k'mifalo, notein l'rasha ra k'rishato.

This Judge will not alter and be everlasting. God knows and heeds the secret thoughts of humanity: God saw the end before there even was a beginning. With love and grace does God bless the righteous; God treats the wicked with justice and mercy.

Yishlach l'keitz hayamin m'shicheinu, lifdot m'chakei keitz y'shuato.
Meitim y'chayeh eil b'rov chasdo, baruch adei ad sheim t'hilato.

At the end, God will redeem us. God will restore us to life. Praised by God’s glorious Name forever!

Salaam! Od Yavo Shalom
