In some communities the congregation rises and faces the doorway in order to greet the Sabbath Bride. In addition, we bow and then turn back to the front of the room, to acknowledge her entrance.

Come, let us sing to Adonai: let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation. Let us greet our God with thanksgiving: let us sing songs of praise for our God.
For Adonai is a great God, and a great Sovereign over all of creation. God fashioned everything from the lowest valleys to the highest mountain peaks, from the ocean to the dry land.
(Reader) O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before Adonai our Maker. For Adonai is our God and our Shepherd, and we are God’s people and flock.

THE MAN IN THE RIVER

These three men decided that they would have a picnic. They went out into the woods and found the perfect spot, right next to a gently bubbling river. They set out their blanket, unpacked their food, and were just settling down to eat when they heard screaming coming from the river. They ran over to look and they see a man coming down the river. He’s flailing his arms, screaming- clearly in trouble. So they link arms, reach in, and pull him out of the river. They get him up onto the bank of the river, and he’s coughing and trying to catch his breath, but he’s going to be OK. Before he can catch his breath and they can ask him why he was in the river, they hear screaming again from the river. They run back over and they see another man coming down the river. He’s flailing his arms, screaming- clearly in trouble. So they link arms, reach in, and pull him out of the river. They get him up onto the bank of the river, and he’s coughing and trying to catch his breath, but he’s going to be OK. Before he can catch his breath and they can ask him why he was in the river, they hear screaming again from the river. This happens again and again, and before long they have a whole collection of people recovering on the bank of the river.

The next time there is screaming from the river, one of the original three guys starts to walk away. His friends say – “Dude! Where are you going? We need to save the person in the river!”

He replies: “You stay here. Use these folks to help you and keep pulling people out of the river. That’s really important. But I’m going to go upstream and find out why there are people falling into the river in the first place.”

First moral of the story: There’s an upstream and a downstream to every social issue. If we only focus downstream (usually direct service), we can work indefinitely and never change the situation that is causing the problem in the first place. We can pull people out of the river forever and not stop people from needing to be pulled out! It is only when we go upstream, when we look at the causes of problems and work to create systemic, long-term, large-scale changes that we can truly have a major impact on a problem.

But there’s an important second moral of the story as well, that it would be easy to miss, so let me underscore it: To those people who are currently in the river, pulling them out is the most important thing you can do for them. Direct service, in this case, could literally be the difference between life and death. To someone who is starving, feeding them is essential. It’s important that you don’t hear this story and think that it’s telling you to focus solely on the upstream approach. What is important is the balance – that you mix your activities, that you focus on both the long-term, big-scale changing of systems and communities AND the direct service, feed-those-who-are-hungry-now work.

Bar'chu ברכו

Reader: The reader faces the ark and bows while saying the first line “Bar’chu et Adonai hamvorach”.

Praise God, source of blessing.

The congregation bows and says “Baruch Adnoai .....”
Then the Reader bows and repeats the same line.

Ahavat Olam אהבת עולם

You have loved Your people Israel with everlasting love; Torah and mitzvot You have taught us. Therefore, O Adonai our God, when we lie down and when we rise up we will meditate on Your commandments. We will rejoice in the words of Your Torah and mitzvot forever; for they are our life and the sustenance of our days; we will meditate on them day and night.(Reader) And may You never deprive us of Your love. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, who loves Your people Israel.

The Shema is a very special prayer - it allows us to stop and think and connect directly with God. Some people sit, some people stand, some cover their eyes and some keep them open - however you celebrate and sing this prayer is really a personal choice, but tonight, as we say this together, we'd like to try something a little different. We are going to take as much time as is needed to say each and every word of this prayer which is really only 6 words long, but is arguably the most important prayer in all of Judaism. So, take a deep breath before we start and use your whole breath and whole body to say each word, letting the last notes trail out of you with the last of your breath.

The first line of the Sh'ma is recited out loud and in unison, with the right hand covering the eyes. "Baruch Shem K'vod" is recited in an undertone.

Hear, O Israel: Adonai is our God, Adonai is one.

Blessed is God’s glorious majesty forever and ever.

Sh'ma Yisra-eil, Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad.

Baruch sheim k'vod malchuto l'olam va-ed.

שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל, יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ, יְיָ אֶחָד.

V'ahavta Deuteronomy 6:4-9 ואהבת

And you shall love Adonai your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words, which I command you this day, shall be upon your heart: and you shall teach them diligently unto your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the door-posts of your house, and upon your gates.

Who is like You, Adonai, among all the gods? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in splendor, doing wonders?
Your children beheld Your sovereign power, as You cleaved the sea before Moses: they exclaimed, this is my god! Adonai shall reign for ever and ever! (Reader) For our God delivered Jacob and redeemed our people from the hand of stronger opponents. Blessed are You, Adonai, our God, who has redeemed Your people Israel.

V'Sham'ru ושמרו

The children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing it throughout all generations, as an everlasting covenant. It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever, that in six days Adonai made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day ceased from work and rested.

The Amidah is the central prayer of all four services: shacharit (morning), mincha (afternoon), maariv (evening), and mussaf (additional). The word Amidah literally means standing, because it is recited while standing. It is also known as Shemoneh Esrei, meaning eighteen, because it originally consisted of eighteen blessings, and as tefilah (prayer) because it is the most important Jewish prayer. The obligation to pray three times a day, which was established by Ezra and codified in the Talmud (Berakhot 26b), is fulfilled by reciting the Amidah.

In the 5th century B.C.E., the 120 men of the Great Assembly composed the basic text of the Amidah. The exact form and order of the blessings were codified after the destruction of the Second Temple in the first century C.E. The Amidah was expanded from eighteen to nineteen blessings in the 2nd century C.E., under the leadership of Rabbi Gamliel the Elder in Yavneh. The additional blessing (against heretics) was initially meant to combat the threats posed by the Samaritan and Sadducee sects, and was permanently added to the liturgy when Jewish converts to Christianity began to inform on Jews to the Roman authorities.
Laws and Customs

One should stand with one's feet together while reciting the Amidah as a show of respect for God. The rabbis add that this pose mirrors the vision of angels that Ezekiel had in which the feet of the angels appeared as one (Ezekiel 1:7). The custom is to face the direction of Israel, and if one is in Israel, to turn to Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. This shows respect for the Temples, which were central to Jewish life, and reminds one that the synagogue was established to try to fill the gap in Jewish life left by the Temples' destruction. In many synagogues in the west, the ark is on the eastern wall of the synagogue for this reason.

The Amidah is a person's opportunity to approach God in private prayer, and should therefore be said quietly. The words must be audible to oneself, but one should be careful to pray softly enough not to disturb others. If one is alone, it is permissible to raise one's voice slightly if it helps concentration. It is forbidden to interrupt the Amidah even to greet an important person. One should not even acknowledge a greeting. Only a grave emergency justifies interrupting the Amidah, since it is considered a conversation with God.

There are several interesting customs relating to one's physical position while saying the Amidah. Before one begins the Amidah, it is customary to take three small steps forward as if one is approaching a king. Some say this was derived from Abraham who

In some communities the entire Amidah is read silently by each individual and then repeated out loud by the reader or cantor. In other communities the introduction and first two paragraphs are sung out loud by the entire congregation and the remainder is said silently. You may be seated when you finish your silent Amidah prayers.

At the start of the Amidah, it is customary to take three steps backward, then three steps forward and remain standing with your feet together through the entire Amidah. This is meant to remind us that we are standing in the presence of God, and should enter the spiritual realm with respect and reverence.

Adonai, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

In some congregations, only those in mourning or observing a yartzheit stand and recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. However, particularly since the Holocaust, some congregations have developed the practice of everyone present reciting the Kaddish on behalf of those who have no one left to say Kaddish for them. Therefore, each individual should stand or sit as is their personal custom.

Magnified and sanctified is God’s great name in the world created according to divine will. May God’s majesty reign during your lifetime and throughout your days, and during the life of all the house of Israel, speedily and soon, and let us say, Amen.

Let God’s great Name be blessed forever and for all eternity.

Blessed, praised and glorified, exalted, extolled and honored, magnified and lauded be the Name of the Holy One, though God reigns high above all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations, which are uttered in this world; and let us say: Amen.
