Shacharit Morning Prayers

Mah Tovu

“Mah Tovu” is a song meant to express your gratitude for being able to join in prayer. It is a sign of reverence and appreciation for the house of prayer.

How good are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel! As for me, in the abundance of Your love, I will enter Your house: I will worship toward Your holy temple out of reverence for You. Adonai, I love residing in Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells. I will worship and bow down: I will bend my knee before Adonai, my Maker. May my prayer to You, Adonai, be acceptable: God, in the abundance of Your lovingkindness, answer me with the truth of Your salvation.

Blessing Upon Arising

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who has formed humankind in wisdom and created in humankind many passages and vessels. It is well known before Your glorious throne, that if but one of these be opened, or one of those be closed, it would be impossible to exist and stand before You. Blessed are You, Adonai, who is the wondrous healer of all flesh.

Eilu D'varim

These are the commandments which have no fixed measure: the corners of the field, the first fruits, the offerings brought on appearing before God at the three festivals, the practice of charity and the study of the Torah.—these are the things, of which a human enjoys the fruits in this world, while the stock remains for the world to come: viz., honoring father and mother, deeds of lovingkindness, timely attendance at the house of study morning and evening, hospitality to wayfarers, visiting the sick, dowering the bride, attending the dead to the grave, devotion in prayer, and making peace between one person and another; but the study of the Torah leads to them all.

Elohai Neshama

O my God, the soul which You gave me is pure; You did create it, You did form it, You did breathe it into me. You preserve it within me, and You will take it from me, but will restore it to me hereafter. So long as the soul is within me, I will give thanks to You, Adonai, my God and God of my ancestors, Sovereign of all works, God of all souls! Blessed are You, Adonai, who restores souls unto the dead.

V'Hi Ratzon

And may it be Your will, Adonai our God and God of our ancestors, to accustom us to walk in Your Torah, and to make us cleave to Your commandments. O lead us not into sin, or transgression, iniquity, temptation, or disgrace; let not the evil inclination have sway over us; keep us far from a bad person and a bad companion: make us cleave to the good inclination and to good works: subdue our inclination so that it may submit itself to You: and let us obtain this day, and every day, grace, favor, and mercy in Your eyes, and in the eyes of all who behold us; and bestow lovingkindness upon us. Blessed are You, Adonai, who bestows lovingkindnesses upon Your people Israel.

Pesukei D'zimrah (Verses of Praise)

Mizmor Shir Chanukat Habayit L'David: Psalm 30

A Psalm; a Song at the Dedication of the House; a Psalm of David.
I will extol you, Adonai; for you have drawn me up, and have not made my foes to rejoice over me. Adonai, my God, I cried unto you, and you healed me. Adonai, you brought up my soul from the grave: you have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. Sing praise unto God, O you, God's loving ones, and give thanks to God's holy Name. For God's anger is but for a moment; God's favor is for a lifetime: weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes in the morning. As for me, I said in my prosperity, I shall never be moved. You, Adonai, of your favor have made my mountain to stand strong: you hid your face; I was confounded. I cried unto you, Adonai; and unto God I made supplication: What profit is there in my blood if I go down to the pit? Can the dust give thanks to you? Can it declare your truth? Hear, Adonai, and be gracious to me; Adonai, be my helper.(Reader) You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosened my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness: to the end that my glory may sing praise to you, and not be silent: Adonai my God, I will give thanks unto you forever.

Mizmor Shir L'yom HaShabbat

[Psalm 92]
A Psalm, a Song for the Sabbath Day. It is a good thing to give thanks unto God, and to sing praises unto God's Name, O Most High: to declare your lovingkindness in the morning, and your faithfulness every night, with an instrument of ten strings and with a harp, with solemn music upon the lyre. For you, Adonai, have made me rejoice through your work: I will exult in the works of your hands. How great are your works, Adonai: your thoughts are very deep. A brutish man knows it not, neither does a fool understand this: when the wicked sprang up as the grass, and all the workers of iniquity flourished, it was that they might be destroyed forever. But you, Adonai, are on high for evermore. For, lo, your enemies, Adonai, for, lo, your enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered. But my strength you have exalted, like that of the wild-ox: I am anointed with fresh oil. My eye has also seen the defeat of my enemies; my ears have heard the doom of them that rose up against me, doers of evil. (Reader) The righteous shall spring up like a palm-tree; and shall grow tall like a cedar in Lebanon. Planted in the house of Adonai, they shall blossom in the courts of our God. They shall still shoot forth in old age; they shall be full of sap and green: to declare that Adonai is upright; God is my Rock, and there is no unrighteousness in God.

Ashrei Psalm 145

Those who dwell in Your house are happy and will be forever praising You. Happy are those who are part of Your people. Happy is the people whose God is the Sovereign.

I will praise You, my God and Sovereign and will bless Your Name forever and ever. Every day I will bless You and praise Your Name forever and ever.

Adonai is great and deserving of excessive praise. God’s greatness lasts throughout the generations. One generation shall describe Your holy acts to another, and shall declare Your acts mighty.

I will meditate on Your majestic glory, and Your marvelous deeds.

People will speak of the might of Your tremendous acts and will recount Your greatness. They will speak of Your famous goodness, and will exult in Your righteousness.

Adonai is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and full of great lovingkindness. Adonai is good to all and exudes tender mercy through God’s holy work.

All Your works will give thanks to You, O God, and Your loved ones will bless You.

They will speak of Your glory and Your power to make known to the world God’s mighty acts, and the majestic glory of the divine kingdom.

Your sovereignty is everlasting. Your reign endures throughout all generations.

Adonai supports all who fall and raises up all those who are bowed down. The eyes of all remain fixed upon You and You give them their food when the time is right.

You open Your hand and spread Your favor over all living creatures. Adonai is righteous in every way and works only through love.

Adonai is near to all who call in truth.

Adonai’s reverent followers will have their desires fulfilled. God will hear their cries and will save them. All who love Adonai will be protected, but all the wicked will be destroyed.

(Reader) My mouth shall express praise for Adonai. May all of humanity learn to bless God’s holy Name forever and ever. We will bless Adonai from this time forth and forevermore. Praise God!

Nishmat Kol Chai

The breath of every living being shall bless your Name, Adonai our God, and the spirit of all flesh shall ever extol and exalt your fame, O our Sovereign. From everlasting to everlasting you are God; and beside you we have no Sovereign, O you who redeems and saves, set free and deliver, who support and pities in all times of trouble and distress; yes, we have no Ruler but you.

You are God of the first and of the last ages, God of all creatures, God of all generations, adored in innumerable praises, guiding your world with lovingkindness and your creatures with tender mercies. Adonai slumbers not, nor sleeps, God arouses the sleepers and awakens the slumberers; God makes the dumb to speak, sets free the prisoners, supports the falling, and raises up those who are bowed down.

To you alone we give thanks. Were our mouths full of song as the sea, and our tongues of exultation as the multitude of its waves, and our lips of praise as the wide-extended skies; were our eyes shining with light like the sun and the moon, and our hands were spread forth like the eagles of the air, and our feet were swift as the wild deer, we should still be unable to thank you and to bless your Name, O Adonai our God and God of our ancestors, for one thousandth or one ten thousandth part of the bounties which you have bestowed upon our ancestors and upon us. You redeemed us from Egypt, Adonai our God, and released us from the house of bondage; during famine you fed us, and sustained us in plenty; from the sword you rescued us, from pestilence you saved us, and from sore and lingering diseases you delivered us.

Hitherto your tender mercies have helped us, and your lovingkindnesses have not left us: forsake us not, O Adonai our God, for ever. Therefore the limbs which you have planted in us, and the spirit and soul which you have breathed into us, and the tongue which you have set in our mouths, lo, they shall thank, bless, praise, glorify, extol, reverence, hallow and do homage to your Name, O our Ruler. For every mouth shall give thanks unto you, and every tongue shall swear allegiance unto you; every knee shall bow to you, and whatsoever is lofty shall prostrate itself before you. All hearts shall revere you, and our innermost being shall sing unto your Name, according to the word that is written, All my bones shall say, Adonai, who is like you? Thou deliver the poor from those that are stronger than he, the poor and the needy from those that rob him. Who is like you, who is equal to you, who can be compared unto you, O God, great, mighty, and awful, most high God, Maker of heaven and earth? We will praise, laud and glorify you, and we will bless your holy Name, as it is said (A Psalm of David,) Bless Adonai, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless God's holy Name. (Reader) You are God in the vastness of your power, great in your glorious Name, mighty forever and revered by your awe-inspiring acts, the Ruler who sits upon a high and lofty throne.

Blessed are you, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who forms light and creates darkness, who makes peace and creates all things:

All shall thank you, and all shall praise you, and all shall say, There is none holy like Adonai. All shall extol you forever, you Creator of all things, O God who opens every day the door of the gates of the East, and cleaves the windows of the firmament, leading forth the sun from its place, and the moon from its dwelling, giving light to the whole world and to its inhabitants whom you created by the attribute of mercy. In mercy you gave light to the earth and to them that dwell thereon, and in your goodness renew the creation every day continually; O Sovereign, who alone was exalted from aforetime, praised, glorified and extolled from days of old. O everlasting God, in your abundant mercies, have mercy upon us, God of our strength, Rock of our stronghold, Shield of our salvation, you Stronghold of ours! (Reader) There is none to be compared unto you, neither is there any beside you; there is none but you: who is like unto you? There is none to be compared unto you, O Adonai our God, in this world, neither is there any beside you, O our Ruler, for the life of the world to come; there is none but you, O our Redeemer, for the days of the Messiah; neither is there any like unto you, O our Savior, for the revival of the dead.

El Adon

The community sings this prayer along with the reader.

God, the Master of all works is ever to be blessed by the mouth of everything that has breath. God’s greatness and goodness fill the universe, surrounded by knowledge and understanding. God is exalted above everything else holy and is adorned in glory above the celestial chariot. Purity and integrity lie before God’s throne, lovingkindness and tender mercy before glory. The luminaries that God created are good: they were formed with knowledge, understanding and discernment. God gave them might and power to rule in the midst of the world. They are full of luster, and they radiate brightness: beautiful is their lustre throughout all the world. They rejoice in their commencement, and are glad in their returning; they perform with awe the will of their Master. Glory and honour they render unto God’s Name, exultation and rejoicing at the fame of God’s sovereignty. God called unto the sun, and it shone forth in light: God looked, and ordained the figure of the moon. All the hosts on high render praise unto God, the Seraphim, the Ophanim and the holy Chayoth ascribing glory and greatness

La'El Asher Shavat

To the God who rested from all works, and on the seventh day was exalted and sat upon a throne of glory. With beauty the day of rest was robed, and called the Sabbath day a delight. This is the great distinction of the Sabbath day, that God rested thereon from all work, when the Sabbath day itself offered praise and said “A Psalm, a song of the Sabbath day, It is good to give thanks unto Adonai”. Therefore let all God's creatures glorify and bless God; let them render praise, honor and greatness to the God and Sovereign who is Creator of all things, and who, in holiness, gives an inheritance of rest to the people of Israel on the holy Sabbath day. Your Name, O Adonai our God, shall be hallowed, and your fame, O our Ruler, shall be proclaimed in heaven above and on the earth beneath. Be you blessed, O our Savior, for the excellency of your handiwork, and for the bright luminaries which you have made: they shall glorify you for ever.

May you be blessed, our Rock, our Ruler and Redeemer, Creator of holy ones. May your name be praised forever, our Sovereign, creator of ministering angels. All of whose ministering angels stand at the summit of the universe and proclaim -- with awe, together, loudly -- the words of the living God and Ruler of universe. (Reader) They are all beloved, they are all flawless, they are all mighty, they all do the will of their Maker with dread and reverence. And they all open their mouths in holiness and purity, in song and hymn, and bless, praise, glorify, revere, sanctify, and declare the sovereignty of --

The Name of the Divine Ruler, the great, mighty and dreaded One, holy is God; and they all take upon themselves the yoke of the kingdom of heaven one from the other, and give leave one unto the other to declare the holiness of their Creator: (Reader) in tranquil joy of spirit, with pure speech and holy melody they all respond in unison, and exclaim with awe:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY IS ADONAI OF HOSTS: THE WHOLE EARTH IS FULL OF GOD'S GLORY.
(Reader) And the Ophanim and the holy Chayot with a noise of great rushing, upraising themselves towards the Seraphim, thus over against them offer praise and say:
BLESSED BE THE GLORY OF ADONAI FROM GOD'S PLACE.

To the blessed God they offer melodious strains; to the Ruler, the living and ever-existing God, they utter hymns and make their praises heard; for God alone works mighty deeds, and makes new things; God is the Ruler over struggle, sowing righteousness, and reaping victory. God creates healing, and is revered in praises. Adonai is the God of wonders, who in goodness renews the creation every day continually; as it is said, (O give thanks) to God that makes great lights, for God's lovingkindness endures for ever. (Reader) O cause a new light to shine upon Zion, and may we all be worthy soon to enjoy its brightness. Blessed are you, Adonai, Creator of the luminaries.

Sh'ma שמע

The first line of the Sh'ma is recited out loud and in unison, with the right hand covering the eyes.

Hear, O Israel: Adonai is our God, Adonai is one.

In an undertone:

Blessed is God’s glory forever and ever.

And you shall love Adonai your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words, which I command you this day, shall be upon your heart: and you shall teach them diligently unto your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the door-posts of your house, and upon your gates.

And it shall come to pass, if you shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love Adonai your God, and to serve God with all your heart and with all your soul, that I will give the rain of your land in its season, the former rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your corn, and your wine, and your oil. And I will give grass in thy field for your cattle, and you shall eat and be satisfied. Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; and the anger of Adonai be kindled against you, and God shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and you perish quickly from off the good land which Adonai gave you. Therefore shall you lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul; and you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall teach them your children, talking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house, and upon your gates: that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, upon the land which Adonai swore unto your ancestors to give them, as the days of the heavens above the earth.

And Adonai spoke to Moses, saying. Speak to the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them a fringe upon the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of each corner a cord of blue: and it shall be for you for a fringe, that you may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of Adonai, and do them: and that you go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you go astray: that you may remember and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God. I am Adonai your God, who brought you out of the Land of Egypt, to be your God: I am Adonai your God.

Emet V'yatziv

True and firm, established and enduring, right and faithful, beloved and precious, desirable and pleasant, revered and mighty, well-ordered and acceptable, good and beautiful is this Your word to us forever and ever. It is true, the God of the universe is our Sovereign, the Rock of Jacob, the Shield of our salvation: throughout all generations God endures and God’s Name endures. The majestic throne is established, and God’s faithfulness endures forever. God’s words also live and endure; they are faithful and desirable forever and for all eternity, as for our ancestors so also for us, our children, our generations, and for all the generations of the seed of God’s servant Israel.

Al Ha'rishonim

Alike for former and later ages your word is good and endures forever and ever; it is true and trustworthy, a statute which shall not pass away. True it is that you are indeed Adonai our God, and the God of our Ancestors, our Sovereign, our ancestors’ Ruler, our Redeemer, the Redeemer of our ancestors, our Maker, the Rock of our salvation; our Deliverer and Rescuer from everlasting, such is your Name; there is no God beside you.

Ezrat Avoteinu

You have been the help of our ancestors from of old, a Shield and Savior to their children after them in every generation: in the heights of the universe is your habitation, and your judgments and your righteousness reach to the furthest ends of the earth. Happy is the person who hearkens unto your commandments, and lays up yourTorah and your word in their heart. True it is that you are indeed the first and you are the last, and beside you we have no Ruler, Redeemer and Savior.

From Egypt you redeemed us, O Adonai our God, and from the house of bondmen you delivered us; all their first-born you slayed, but your first-born you redeemed; you divided the Red Sea, and drowned the proud; but you made the beloved to pass through, while the waters covered their adversaries, not one of whom was left. Wherefore the beloved praised and extolled God, and offered hymns, songs, praises, blessings and thanksgivings to the Sovereign, the living and ever-enduring God; who is high and exalted, great and revered; who brings low the haughty, and raises up the lowly, frees the prisoners, delivers the meek, helps the poor, and answers God's people when they cry unto God.

(Reader) Even praises to the Most High God, blessed is God, and ever to be blessed. Moses and the children of Israel sang a song unto you with great joy, saying, all of them.

The Amidah

Mi Chamochah

Rise for the Amidah at this point.

Who is like you among the mighty? Who is like you glorious and holy? Who is like you revered in praise and performing wondrous miracles? With a new song the redeemed people praised Your Name at the seashore. They all gave thanks in unison, and proclaimed Your sovereignty, and said: Adonai shall reign forever and ever!

Take three steps back while saying "tzur yisrael" in preparation for the Amidah.

Rock of Israel, arise to the help of Israel, and deliver according to your promise, Judah and Israel. Our Redeemer, the Master of hosts is God's Name, the Holy One of Israel. Blessed are you, Adonai, who has redeemed Israel.

Avot [v'Imahot] [

Rise for the Amidah and face the Ark.

In some communities it is customary to take three steps backward, then three steps forward and remain standing with your feet together through the entire Amidah.

[In some communities, it is customary to insert the names of the matriarchs included here in brackets.]

Bow as you recite Baruch Atah and then straighten up.

Adonai, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God and God of our ancestors: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, [Sarah, Rebecca, Leah, and Rachel]. The great, mighty and revered God, the most high God, who bestows lovingkindness, and is Master over all things; who remembers the pious deeds of the patriarchs and matriarchs, and in love will redeem us for their sake.

O Sovereign, Helper, Savior and Shield. Blessed are You, Adonai, the Shield of Abraham [and Sarah].

G'vurot

You, O God, are mighty forever, all life is Your gift, and amazing is your saving abilities.

Winter: You cause the wind to blow and the rain to fall.

Summer: You cause the wind to blow and the dew to fall.

You sustain the living with lovingkindness, and revitalize us all with life. You support the falling, cure the sick, free the captive, and keep Your faith with those who sleep in the dust. Who is like You, Doer of mighty acts? Who resembles You, O Sovereign, who dictates between life and death, offering us salvation?

Faithful are You in revitalizing us all with life. Blessed are You, Adonai, Source of all life.

In winter say

In summer say

During the silent Amidah, continue with "Atah Kadosh".
During the Reader's repetition, "Kedusha" is recited at this point.

Kedushah

Remain standing with your feet together throughout the entire Kedushah.

Each section is recited by the Community and then repeated by the Chazzan.

In some communities, it is customary to rise up on one's toes when saying the lines "Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh," "Baruch K'vod" and "Yimloch Adonai."

We will sanctify Your Name in the world, even as they sanctify It in the highest heavens, as it is written by the hand of Your prophet: And they called to each other and said: holy, holy, holy is Adonai above all. The whole earth radiates God’s glory. Then with a noise of great rushing, mighty and strong, they make their voices heard, and, upraising themselves towards the Seraphim, they exclaim: blessed be the glory of Adonai from high places. From Your place shine forth, O our Sovereign, and reign over us, for we wait for You. When will You reign in Zion? Speedily, even in our days, go dwell there, and stay forever.

May You be magnified and sanctified in the midst of Jerusalem Your city throughout all generations and for all eternity. Let our eyes behold Your greatness, according to the word that was spoken in the songs of Your righteous servant David: Adonai will reign forever, Your God, O Zion, across all generations. Praise Adonai. Across all generations we will declare Your greatness, and for all eternity we will proclaim Your holiness. Your praise, O God, shall never depart from our mouths, for You are a great and holy God and Sovereign. Blessed are You, Adonai, the holy God.

Yismach Moshe

Moses rejoiced at the lot assigned to him, for You called him a faithful servant: You placed a crown of glory upon his head when he stood before You at Mount Sinai. In his hand he brought down the two tablets of stone, on which are written instructions to observe the Sabbath as it says in Your Torah:

V'shamru

And the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel forever, that in six days Adonai made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day rested, and ceased from all work.

Eloheinu v'Elohei Avoteinu

Our God and God of our ancestors, accept our rest; hallow us by Your mitzvot, and set Your Torah apart for us; satisfy us with Your goodness, and gladden us with Your salvation. Purify our hearts to serve You in truth. In Your love and favour, Adonai our God, let us inherit Your holy Sabbath; and may Israel, who sanctifies Your Name, rest on this day. Silent Prayer or Elohai N'tzor אלהי נצור

During this section, a silent, personal prayer may be added to the Amidah.

Guard my tongue from evil and my lips from slander. To those who curse me, let my soul be quiet and humble. Open my heart to Your Torah, and let my soul pursue Your commandments. If anyone plots evil against me, quickly step in and frustrate their designs. Do it for the sake of Your Name, do it for the sake of Your power, do it for the sake of Your holiness, do it for the sake of Your Torah. In order that Your beloved ones may be delivered, use Your power, and answer me. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, O God, my Rock and my Redeemer.

The Torah Reading Service

Mi Shebeirach

God Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Moses and Aaron, David and Solomon - may God bless and heal the sick person (name) son/daughter of (mother's name) because (name w/ mother's name) will contribute to charity on his/her behalf. In reward for this, may the Holy One be filled with compassion for him/her to restore his/her health, to heal, strengthen and revivify him/her. And may God send him a complete recovery from heaven for his/her 248 organs and 365 blood vessels, among the other sick people of Israel, a recovery of the body and spirit (though Shabbat/the Festival does not let us cry out, may a recovery come quickly) swiftly and soon. And let us say, Amen.

Mizmor l'David

As the Torah is carried to the Ark, the community recites the following:

A psalm of David. Ascribe unto Adonai, O you children of might, ascribe unto Adonai glory and strength. Ascribe unto Adonai the glory due unto God's Name; worship Adonai in the beauty of holiness. The voice of Adonai is upon the waters: the God of glory thunders, even God upon the many waters. The voice of Adonai is powerful; the voice of God is full of majesty. The voice of God breaks the cedars; yes, Adonai breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. God makes them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild-ox. The voice of Adonai hews out flames of fire; the voice of Adonai shakes the wilderness; Adonai shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of God makes the hind to calve, and strips the forests bare: and in God's temple everything says, Glory. Adonai sat enthroned at the Flood; yes, Adonai sits as Sovereign for ever. Adonai will give strength unto God's people; Adonai will bless God's people with peace.

You, O God, are mighty forever, all life is Your gift, and amazing is your saving abilities.

Winter: You cause the wind to blow and the rain to fall.

During the silent Amidah, continue with "Atah Kadosh".
During the Reader's repetition, "Kedusha" is recited at this point.

Kedusha

Remain standing with your feet together throughout the entire Kedushah.

Each section is recited by the Community and then repeated by the Chazzan.

In some communities, it is customary to rise up on one's toes when saying the lines "Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh," "Baruch K'vod" and "Yimloch Adonai."

Reader.—We will revere and sanctify you according to the mystic utterance of the holy Seraphim, who sanctify your Name in holiness, as it is written by the hand of your prophet, And they called one unto the other and said,

Cong.—HOLY, HOLY, HOLY IS ADONAI OF HOSTS: THE WHOLE EARTH IS FULL OF GOD'S GLORY.

Reader.—God's glory fills the universe: God's ministering angels ask one another, Where is the place of God's glory? Those over against them say, Blessed—

Cong.—BLESSED BE THE GLORY OF ADONAI FROM GOD'S PLACE.

Reader.—From God's place may Adonai turn in mercy and be gracious unto a people who, evening and morning, twice every day, proclaim with constancy the unity of God's Name, saying in love, Hear—

Cong.—HEAR, O ISRAEL: ADONAI IS OUR GOD, ADONAI IS ONE.

Reader.—One is our God; Adonai is our Parent; Adonai is our King; Adonai is our Savior; and God in mercy will let us hear a second time, in the presence of all living (God's promise), “To be to you for a God.”

Cong.—I AM ADONAI YOUR GOD.”

Reader.—And in your Holy Words it is written, saying,

Cong.—ADONAI SHALL REIGN FOR EVER, YOUR GOD, O ZION, UNTO ALL GENERATIONS. PRAISE ADONAI.

Reader.—Unto all generations we will declare your greatness, and to all eternity we will proclaim your holiness, and your praise, O our God, shall not depart from our mouth for ever, for you are a great and holy God and Ruler. Blessed are you, O Adonai, the holy God.

Yismachu

They that keep the Sabbath and call it a delight shall rejoice in your kingdom; the people that hallow the seventh day, even all of them shall be satiated and delighted with your goodness, seeing that you found pleasure in the seventh day, and hallowed it; you called it the desirable of days, in remembrance of the creation.

Eloheinu v'Elohei Avoteinu

Our God and God of our ancestors, accept our rest; hallow us by your commandments, and grant our portion in your Torah; satisfy us with your goodness, and gladden us with your salvation; purify our hearts to serve you in truth; and in your love and favor, O Adonai our God, let us inherit your holy Sabbath; and may Israel, who sanctifies your Name, rest thereon. Blessed are you, Adonai, who hallows the Sabbath.

Retsei רצה

Accept, Adonai our God, your people Israel and their prayer; restore the service to the inner sanctuary of your house; receive in love and favor both the fire offerings of Israel and their prayer; and may the service of your people Israel be ever acceptable unto you.

And let our eyes behold your return in mercy to Zion. Blessed are you, Adonai, who restores your divine presence unto Zion.

Closing Prayers

Aleinu

Rise for Aleinu.

It is customary to bow at “va-anachnu korim” and stand up at “modim.”

It is our duty to praise the Ruler of all things, to ascribe greatness to the One who formed the world in the beginning. So we bend the knee and offer worship and thanks before the supreme Sovereign of sovereigns, the Holy One, who stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth, the seat of whose glory is in the heavens above, and the residence of whose might is in the loftiest heights. Adonai is our God; there is none else: in truth Adonai is our Ruler; there is none else; as it is written in the Torah: “And you shall know this day, and lay it to your heart, that Adonai is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath: there is none else."

We therefore place our hope in You, Adonai our God, that we may speedily behold the glory of Your might, when You will purify the earth, and righteousness will dominate. When the world will be perfected under the rule of the Almighty, and all the world’s children will call Your Name. When You will turn to Yourself all the evil-doers upon earth. Let all the inhabitants of the world perceive and know that to You every knee must bow, every tongue must swear allegiance. Before You, Adonai our God, let them bow and worship, and to Your glorious Name let them give honor. Let them all accept You and have You reign over them speedily, and forever and ever. The dominion is Yours, and for all eternity You will reign in glory. As it is written in Your Torah, “Adonai shall reign forever and ever.” And it is said, “Adonai shall be ruler over all the Earth: in that day, Adonai shall be One and God’s name shall be One.”

Mourner's Kaddish

In some communities, only those in mourning or observing a yartzheit stand and recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. However, particularly since the Holocaust, some communities have developed the practice of everyone present reciting the Kaddish on behalf of those who have no one left to say Kaddish for them.

Therefore, each individual should stand or sit as is their personal custom.

The community responds amen throughout.

Mourner.—Magnified and sanctified be God's great Name in the world which God created according to God's will. May God establish God's kingdom during your life and during your days, and during the life of all the house of Israel, even speedily and at a near time and say you, Amen.
Cong. and Mourner.—Let God's great Name be blessed forever and to all eternity.
Mourner.—Blessed, praised and glorified, exalted, extolled and honored, magnified and lauded be the Name of the Holy One, may God be blessed: though God be high above all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations, which are uttered in the world; and say you, Amen.
Congregation.—Amen.
Mourner.—May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life for us and for all Israel; and say you, Amen.
Congregation.—Amen.
